Re: First dentist visit??

I called the pediatric dentist when DS was 17 months and the first available new patient slot is when he turns 2 (next month) so if you are thinking about taking your DC when they are 2 you might want to call ahead. I am glad that I did.

I was told at 2 years, unless there is some problem.

Re: First dentist visit??

My SIL and sister--who are a dentist and a hygienist respectively both told me age 3. So that's what I did. The hygienist there also said 3.

And yeah...$275 later, I'm glad I didn't go earlier. Chat Icon

Amanda went right after she turned 3. Tommy has not gone yet. I will wait until he is 3 too.

Re: First dentist visit??

My ped. said when they get teeth, around 1. The ped. dentist says the same. The regular dentist seems to say 3. So there is a lot of conflicting opinions on it. I took DD at 18 mos.

My sis is a hygenist and told me 3 is a good age to start cleanings - so we went when she turned 3.

Re: First dentist visit??

I just took DD and she will be 3 in September. When the dentist tried to brush her teeth, she gagged on the awful taste of the toothpaste and threw-up all over me, her and the dentist. Not a fun day for us Chat Icon

The new AAP recommendation is 1. As a hygienist I tell my patients 3 and follow that with my own kids...I did speak to my pediatrician about the new rec and she agreed with me that it was too young. As long as the parents are following good homecare routines then it's ok to wait til 2.5-3yrs old.
