Re: "First dog won't be a mutt like me"
Are we reading into this too?
I think the problem he is facing is that yes, most shelter dogs are mutts and for the sake of his daughter's allergies, he needs to know that the dog he is getting is NOT going to be a mixed breed that might trigger anything. It's possible but difficult to get a pure breed at the shelter. However, when you now have to narrow the breed to a hypoallergenic breed, it's more difficult.
ETA: one of the biggest mutts here and I'm proud of it!

I don't see anything wrong with it. It doesn't offend/bother me.

I hope he is able to go to a rescue org that has breeds that are hypoallergenic.

Re: "First dog won't be a mutt like me"
Malia, 10, is allergic to dogs, they are considering a hypoallergenic breed.
But in a reference to his own identity as the son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, he added: 'Our preference is to get a shelter dog, but most shelter dogs are mutts like me.'
which begs the question - so what? there's nothing that needs to be interpreted from this.

Re: "First dog won't be a mutt like me"
Does anyone else think its silly that he *has* to get a pet to be in the white house? It's one thing to move in a pet you already have. But why does he have to get one if he doesn't alreayd have one?
And why is this a subject of national discussion?

I think it's because his daughters had been begging him for a dog and he promised them that yes, elected or not, we're getting a dog.

I don't think he *has* to get one, but he promised the girls that they could get a dog to help ease the transition. I think that's a nice idea. They are leaving behind all of their friends, but they'll have a new best friend.

The subject of this thread was not a direct quote from Obama. It was an interpretation.

Unfortunately the title of this thread is "First dog WON'T be a mutt like me" and it might have confused people---since that is not what he said..i think that is what some people are having issues trying to interpret.

Re: "First dog won't be a mutt like me"
Its like people are never happy, when we were on a different post yesterday we were all hoping how he would get a shelter dog. Now that he is saying he is, but it has to be hypoallergenic for his daughter's sake the issue is that he is calling them a mutt??? DH calls himself a mutt all the time, our kids will be mutts as well I dont see the big deal <shrug>

Re: "First dog won't be a mutt like me"
Take from The FULL transcript
Question: Thank you for asking. Here's my question. I'm wondering what you're doing to get ready. Have you spoke to any living ex-presidents, what books you might be reading?
Everyone wants to know, what kind of dog are you going to buy for your girls? Have you decided on a private or public school for your daughters?
Obama: Let -- let me list those off.
In terms of speaking to former presidents, I've spoken to all of them that are living. Obviously, President Clinton -- I didn't want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any seances.
I have re-read some of Lincoln's writings, who's always an extraordinary inspiration.
And, by the way, President Carter, President Bush, Sr., as well as the current president have all been very gracious and offered to provide any help that they can in this transition process.
With respect to the dog, this is a major issue. I think it's generated more interest on our Web site than just about anything.
We have -- we have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One is that Malia is allergic, so it has to be hypoallergenic. There are a number of breeds that are hypoallergenic.
On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me. So -- so whether we're going to be able to balance those two things I think is a pressing issue on the Obama household.
And with respect to schools, Michelle will be -- will be scouting out some schools. We'll be making a decision about that in the future.

I think he was just trying to be funny and lighthearted like the pp stated.......I also think he's addressing that he is biracial and in essence a "mut". It was funny and not nearly as controversial as some want to make it.

Right, so at NO TIME did Barack Obama say "the first dog won't be a mutt like me" as the subject in this thread states.
The OP's choice of subject title is unfair, misleading and inflamitory.
But I'm of the mindset that that was exactly what she was going for.
Edited to remove the word "wrong" from my description of the thread.

The OP's choice of subject title is wrong, misleading and inflamitory. .
She is quoting the article that she referenced. It is up to everyone here to actually read the article and read that the sentence is part quote, part editorial.
Is it misleading, yes. Wrong, not since she quoted the article.

I guess... My wrong was not that the quote was incorrect but that posting a subject line like that was. KWIM?
Still it's sad. Why post something in that manor? I just don't get it...
Edited for spelling and content - I'm typing without my glasses - a BIG no-no.
