Re: "First dog won't be a mutt like me"
It's just nice to know he is looking at a shelter dog. But knowing his daughter has allergies makes it harder to find a dog that wont trigger an attack.
I thought the comment was cute.

I like that he acknowledged that shelter dogs are his preference.

This is so unimportant today.
Also, not for nothing, but I did get my purebred from a rescue. He can do the same and accomplish both goals. (hey, i can be bipartisan here!).

Take from The FULL transcript
Question: Thank you for asking. Here's my question. I'm wondering what you're doing to get ready. Have you spoke to any living ex-presidents, what books you might be reading?
Everyone wants to know, what kind of dog are you going to buy for your girls? Have you decided on a private or public school for your daughters?
Obama: Let -- let me list those off.
In terms of speaking to former presidents, I've spoken to all of them that are living. Obviously, President Clinton -- I didn't want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any seances.
I have re-read some of Lincoln's writings, who's always an extraordinary inspiration.
And, by the way, President Carter, President Bush, Sr., as well as the current president have all been very gracious and offered to provide any help that they can in this transition process.
With respect to the dog, this is a major issue. I think it's generated more interest on our Web site than just about anything.
We have -- we have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One is that Malia is allergic, so it has to be hypoallergenic. There are a number of breeds that are hypoallergenic.
On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me. So -- so whether we're going to be able to balance those two things I think is a pressing issue on the Obama household.
And with respect to schools, Michelle will be -- will be scouting out some schools. We'll be making a decision about that in the future.
thank you for posting the whole thing!! sometimes I don't think people take the time to read things before they post their take on it to be FACT

I personally don't see the big deal. I've know of white people who have ancestors from multiple countries call themselves mutts.

Re: "First dog won't be a mutt like me"
Aren't most us "mutts"?
Just because he is the president elect does not mean he is not a real person - it was a joke, I say we all need to chill a little bit.
And wasn't that comment expressing concern for his daughters health? He clearly said he was in favor of adoption, but being that his daughter is allergic they need to be careful about which dog they choose.
Even when issues aren't political they get so out of hand. I didn't even vote for Obama, but I do think this kind of scrutiny is ridiculous.

Re: "First dog won't be a mutt like me"
Am I a moron here or isn't he saying that although he prefers a shelter pup that many/most of them are mutts and not purebred hypoallergenic which is what they need for his daughter? What is wrong with this statement?
I think this was def taken out of context and is not a racial issue in the slightest...unless of course as stated above I AM in fact a moron!

You are NOT a moron. I understood this exactly the same way. And while I fully support adopting shelter pets, I certainly don't blame him for putting the health of his daughter first.

Are we reading into this too?
I think the problem he is facing is that yes, most shelter dogs are mutts and for the sake of his daughter's allergies, he needs to know that the dog he is getting is NOT going to be a mixed breed that might trigger anything. It's possible but difficult to get a pure breed at the shelter. However, when you now have to narrow the breed to a hypoallergenic breed, it's more difficult.
ETA: one of the biggest mutts here and I'm proud of it!
