First Time with Veggies?

Ok girls, I'm clueless. DD is 6 months and still hasn't had fruits or veggies, just cereal. We wanted to try one with her today. I have a bunch of Earth's Best Stage 1 foods (sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, and then fruit). I know to start with veggies, and to do just 1 veggie for 3 days, but what else do I need to know? I put some into a little bowl and don't feed her out of the jar so that I can reuse the leftovers, right? How long are the jars good in the fridge? How much should I try giving her at first? Which do you suggest starting with first?

Thanks, I'm very lost with this, and we don't go to ped until next week!

Re: First Time with Veggies?

Start with yellow or orange veggies. The Earth's Best stays in the fridge for up to 3 days. Yes, I would put about 1/4 of the jar into a bowl at first to see if she likes it. If you feed out of the jar you need to finish it b/c there is a higher rate of bacterial growth. You can always take more out of the jar if she likes it & wants more. At 7 mos, DS eats 1/2 a jar with about 3 TBS of cereal 3 times a day. He also has a bottle of either 4 or 6 ounces (depending on how much cereal he ate) with these meals.

Definitely check with your Ped about their recommendations.

We started with fruits first -- but which veggie was our first?? Let me think? Oh - it was carrots.

Put it in the same bowl with the cereal. I do some on the spoon of the cereal and some of the fruit/veggie.

I think it can last for up to 72 hours in the fridge.

Re: First Time with Veggies?

For the first time I gave Lucas a Tbsp of sweet potatoes to see how he would react. He made the strangest faces and had a hard time figuring it all out. So I was glad not to waste too much. The next try was much better and he ate so much more. I still started out with a Tbsp but had the container with a clean spoon on hand to dish out more for him.

ETA: the science behind deciding sweet potatoes first - I never used to eat them but when I got pregnant I fell in love with them and couldn't get enough. The craving just came out of no where. So I figured it had to be Lucas and that's why I gave it to him first Chat Icon But otherwise you can do whatever you want first...cool thing about being the mom!!!!

Thanks ladies, I knew I'd get great advice here!!

So I should mix it with cereal, not feed it to her on it's own? I would have never thought of doing that (bad mommy Chat Icon )

I do...can't get enough of them. And Lucas loves them...for a time with his ear infection he wouldn't eat anything but eventually he would allow me to feed him sweet potatoes only. Chat Icon

DS eats his veggies & fruits sepereately, not mixed with cereal.

First veggie he ate was green beans, he hated it, but the next time he tired it he ate it all up.

ETA: He is 7 months old and is on Stage 2, and He eats the whole jar of veggies at each meal so I feed it to him right out of the container.

We started with sweat potatoes first also and gave about the same amount. But our reason wasn't as cute. It was listed as a suggested first food for BF babies in some of the books and articles that I read. Although I do admit that I Chat Icon sweat potatoes-- and so does my DS. So far we've had a lot of luck with orange food. He just absolutely loves sweat potatoes, butternut squash, carrots, apricots and peaches. (And I admit that these are favorites of mine, as well.)

Have fun. The expressions they give when tasting a new food are just priceless!

We started with carrots, then peas, and now we're onto sweet potatoes. I think we'll do green beans next and then maybe squash.

Re: First Time with Veggies?

We also started with the orange veggies. Carrots was the first and we gave it to him straight. Thank God we video taped it because his face was hysterical. He finished more than 1/2 of the container though.

The lable says how long you can keep it in the fridge. My Peed said I could keep it a couple of extra days.

Re: First Time with Veggies?

Ok, what is the reason to start with orange veggies? I'm all for sweet potatoes first, just don't know the rationale about the orange veggies and I"m curious!

For me it had nothing to do with it being orange. I was actually going to do banana first, however, the banana wasn't ripe enough and I was itching to try out some food with him, so I ran to the store and picked up some sweet potatoes. (As you may have guessed, I've been making his baby food.) He got a lot of orange veggies only because they were what was in season in the fall when I started introducing him. He also got bananas, apples and pears at that time.

I'm not sure why other people start with orange.
