First Trimester Testing?
Did anyone have this done? I was told last week by my doctor that I did not have to worry about this but I am not sure what to think. I am an Ashkenaszi (sp?) Jew and we do not know DH's family history. Should I still look into this test or wait for the second trimester testing? What is the difference? Thanks.

Re: First Trimester Testing?
I am having the 1st tri ultrascreen this week. I am suprised your doctor told you not to worry about having it. I think most doctors encourage it.
Eta: DH and I are both Jewish and he had the Jewish panel of genetic testing done. If he was a carrier for anything, then I would have had the testing done.

The dr is not talking about the ultrascreen, correct? She is talking about genetic testing?
I was under the impression that Ashkenaszi (sp?) jews were a group of people that were supposed to have genetic testing Is your doctor aware of your religious beliefs? You may want to remind her and express your concerns.

Re: First Trimester Testing?
I had my 1st ultrascreen last week and they couldn't get the measurements they needed so I'm going back today. My doctors just mentioned it to me and asked me if it was something I would be interested in. They didn't push the subject but they also didn't say it wasn't something I needed to worry about.

Re: First Trimester Testing?
You are really talking about 2 diferent tests. The jewish panel is a genetic test that looks for markers for you and then if you test positive as a carrier for one your husband is then tested. Since you are not sure of husbands background I would think the Dr would reccommend it. It is just a blood test.
The other test is the ultrascreen which is a sono and a blood test that looks for markers for downs.
Testing is a personal choice and you need to make the decision that is right for your family. I had both done as a precaution and am happy I did so.

Re: First Trimester Testing?
Yeah, we were tested for Tay Sachs and Cystic Fibrosis through a regular blood test (DH is Jewish). It was separate from the ultrascreen. We didn't get the ultrascreen done, but I did go for the AFP in the second trimester.

Re: First Trimester Testing?
When I went for my first prenatal appointment the doctor drew blood. He did the normal pregnancy testing and also did the specialized ones. I have a history of cystic fibrosis in my family and I am of Jewish descent. I came up negative for everything so my dh did not have to be tested. I also had the first trimester screening done but that was to check for downs sydrome. And everything came back normal. If you are concerned about the genetic diseases you can tell your doctor to run the tests. Even if his office doesn't do it he can give you a script to go to your lab (quest or labcorp) to have it done.

When were you tested for Tay Sachs and CF? Is the AFP the test for Downs?

This has nothing to do with the ULTRASCREEN...you are at risk of TAY SACHS. I believe they need to see if you are a carrier...if you are a carrier then you need to see if your DH is a carrier. I dont know my family history well either and my DH is Jewish so I opted to be tested to see if I was a carrier or not.

Re: First Trimester Testing?
I think I was tested at about 12 weeks(?) And since I'm not a carrier for anything, DH didn't have to be tested. And the AFP was for Downs and Trisomy something, and maybe other stuff too. I forget already.

Re: First Trimester Testing?
My DH is an Ashkenazi Jew and I am not and I am still getting tested for all of it (they took about 10 vials at my first appt ).
Any doctor that tells me not to worry about it would make me very nervous I would personally insist on it - it should have been automatic w/ your blood tests to begin with.

Re: First Trimester Testing?
Ok, I am a little concerned about the doctor telling me not to be concerned about this. I called the office and spoke with the OB Coordinator and she is setting me up with an appointment for the testing. She said the doctor was probably basing his judgement on the down syndrome aspect and may not have seen my jewish heritage. That worries me. I hope it was just this one doctor in the practice (there are 10) that would oversee this. The other doctors I saw seemed so thorough. Now I have to see if my insurance will cover it.

Odd answer since Down's testing is done via the ultrascreen, not a bloodtest. Good luck!
FYI - your insurance should absolutely cover it, it's standard practice.

The first trimester screening they send me for includes down's testing (nuchel fold) and genetic testing.

We didn't get the ultrascreen done, but I did go for the AFP in the second trimester.
Same for us. There was a blood test at about 11 weeks, where they took about 12 vials of blood and test for everything from HIV to CF to Fifths Disease immunity.
Then at 16 weeks we did teh AFP which was for Spina Bifida and can be used somewhat for Downs testing.

Re: First Trimester Testing?
I had a whole bunch of testing! They took 21 viles!!! in Q1.
I am also Ashkenazi jew so we had to do that genetic testing. Is your DH jewish? if not, that is why you wouldn't need these testing - since most of them are recessive - both parents need the genes.
