first world problem... help a sista out, please
my son and i are going to be sharing a small bedroom while we're at my father's house. we NEED a new sleeping arrangement.
my first thought was a day bed with a trundle underneath... but i haven't had any luck finding one.
yesterday, we went to ikea. at ikea we found the following:
* a smallish corner sofa that turns into a full-sized sleeper. ~$550 * a few different day beds that have storage underneath, but the trundles open up the bed to a full-sized bed and not two separate beds. ~$550 *only one day bed with a separate trundle. no additional storage, but it looks like the kind of stereotypical bed you would find in a psych ward in a movie... gray metal. ~$525
i'm not sure what to do. a part of me thinks, this is a temporary situation and sharing a bed with my kid will not traumatize him and i might as well purchase something that we can move with. another part of me thinks that a 19 year old young man shouldn't have to share a bed with his mom, any longer than we already have... even if it means that i'm "throwing away" the money on the item.
not sure what i should do

Can you fit two twins? Probably will work out to the same price
ETA or what about a bunk bed? Ikea has a wood one for 159.00. At 19 I would've still climbed onto a bunk to sleep for my Mom...heck I do it now when we go upstate to the cabin sometimes.

I think you should, if financially possible, purchase a second thing for him to sleep on. You could always try and sell it when it comes time to move if it can't go with you.
Maybe check craigs list or a second hand store, instead of buying from IKEA? Is there a cheaper store around? Or could you buy a $100 mattress and put it on the floor if its temporary?

i would just get an air mattress and sleep in the living room and make sure to put it away every morning.

What about two Aerobeds?
You'd be able to keep them (they don't take up much room) once you move into your permanent living situation and have a comfy place for overnight guests at your new place.
They're pretty comfortable. I've had one for years and guests slept on it for weeks at a time, sometimes. I just used it at a friend's house because I crashed there after a wedding, actually.
You'd be spending the money and still keeping it in the longrun.

I would get a twin air mattress if I were you. You can get a good one for less than $50 and it will come in handy in the future.
Otherwise I would get twin beds which you can get for waaay less than $500. I just bought one and we found ikea had the worst prices for twin bed frames and mattresses. We got ours from Walmart. Maybe even consider a futon.

I would get two aerobeds as you can deflate them when you leave and take them with you. Who knows what size place you will move into. Good luck

I would probably do the air mattresses like other posters said OR the sofa only because I know I could put that in a living room and then buy myself a nice bed after.

I agree that I would only get something I could reuse in my next house or something from freecycle/garage sale/craigslist with a new mattress.
What part of CA are you in? There is a building in Manhattan that residents are always advertising furniture on the cheap because they would rather not pay to move it.

I think the aerobeds are the way to go. Like pp stated you can reuse them.

Get a mattress that you will be able to use in your new place and put it on the floor.

Inflatable mattresses with thick mattress pads on them are quite comfortable. Get two, put mattress pads on them to make them feel more bed like - they soften the inflatables ridges - and use different colored sheets for each of you. I've done that. And, you are right. A 19 should not share a bed with his mother.
