I think because they can avoid labor, especially if the c-section is scheduled. My sister had her first vaginally and her second by c-section (they said the baby was going to be big, she was 8lbs.). My sister said she actually preferred the csection.

I was not expecting a C/S and had to have one because he was low fluid and under my rib cage - he wasnt dropping even being induced for 20 hours. I dreaded having one... know what? I'm so happy I did!! I recovered fine and dont have all the other problems my vaginal birth friends told me they had....

Same for me! I had to have an emergency C with Julia because I got preclampsia at 38 weeks, I was so nervous but in the end so happy I did, I recovered great and was walking around the next day, I also heard some bad stories about vaginal births, my next one will be a c-section too!

Re: Five Ways to Avoid a C-section-CNN Article

I have to agree with most of what they said. Most women I know that were induced wound up with a c-section.

I didn't have a c-section because I didn't need one. I was told a c-section is the quickest, easiest way out of the body if the baby is in danger. The most medical intervention I had was an antiobiotic via IV.

I can say that for all of my ideas on how my labor was going to go (and I had 2 of the easiest labors known to woman), it all goes out the window when you hear the words "the health of the baby..."

I didn't even want an IV but since I was going 6 weeks premature, they said, "It could be an infection, we don't know why you're going early...blah, blah, blah...health of the baby." and that was all I needed to hear.

Yes the csection rate is higher now but the technology in monitoring babies in utereo is advancing as well.
Sometimes these things are necessary. Do your research beforehand, ask questions beforehand. The last thing anyone wants is to be asking questions when you're scared & in labor. Most importantly, if you don't trust your doctor, get another one.

Thanks for sharing. Yes, I do believe that sometimes C-sections are very necessary. On the other hand I do believe that there are some unnecessary c-sections. This is an informative article, and the doula who taught my birthing class told us the same things that were written in this article. It is importnt that we are well-informed as patients. Re: Five Ways to Avoid a C-section-CNN Article

I have a question. When it says to labor at home until you are approximately 3cm dilated, how would a woman at home know how dilated she is if she has no assistance from anyone other than her SO?

The article itself has very good advice, but articles with titles like this give us all the idea that C-sections are the devil and that most of them are optional.

I knew going into pregnancy that the only safe choices for me and baby were either no babies or C-sections.

Do I add to the statistic regarding increase in C-sections? Yes, because 20 years ago treatment for conditions like fibroids were more limited and more women had hysterectomies and losttheir chances to have children.

I could market and sell dilation measuring kits.

i think the authors misspoke here. most OBs have specific guildelines that a laboring woman can actually follow, such as labor at home until the contractions are 5 minutes apart for 2 hours. that's just a rough guideline, but the basic assumption is that if you've been contracting that frequently for that long, you should be at least 3cm.

i think that the point being made by the article is a valid one. a c-section is a major abdominal surgery, and as such should be respected and used only when medically necessary. because the procedure is so common and the outcome (i.e. baby) is so overwhelmingly positive, the overall seriousness of the surgery is often overlooked. the result is that many people are opting for a c-section, or for a procedure that increases the possibility of c-section (e.g. induction) for reasons of convenience.

having said that, there are many situations where a c-section (or an induction, which may lead to c-section)is the safest way to have your child. that would fall into the medically necessary category - it's situations like those for which the c-section was developed.

i don't think the article was condemning c-sections, i think it was just emphasizing that c-sections need to be used more wisely.

I agree. It is not so much articles like this that trouble me, it is the way people interpret them.

DH would freak out as he may not in tune with the funky new "METRIC" system. He may have to get a unit converter and then all hell would break loose. Truth be told, I live less than 2 miles from the hospital where I would be delivering someday. We can get there in about 3 minutes with no lights.

yeah, i agree that articles like this can be easily misinterpreted. in general, i usually cringe when the press covers medical issues (like the "latest finding" about this or that), because the information is usually taken out of context and the article usually has a pretty significant bias one way or the other. on one hand, it's good that at least some information is being disseminated, but giving people only one side of the story can be so dangerous...

Re: Five Ways to Avoid a C-section-CNN Article

I was induced and no c-section despite multiples. I guess I am a rareity

Many doctors want to schedule a c-section as soon as they know you are having multiples... yes, as early as 6 weeksChat Icon

Well, there was no way I was having convenience for them dictate whether I was gettng one or not.

Luckily, I was referred to an excellent practice who does more multiple births on LI than anyone else... they are only second in the country for triplet births. I think my OB could deliver multiples in the dark with one hand tied behind his back...lol.

I was able to deliver both vaginally. Even if my Chat Icon changed position again the doc said that most likely there would be no problem. After Chat Icon came out they'd use the ultrasound to turnChat Icon ... ouch!

It was really important to me to avoid a c-section unless it was really medically necessary.

Re: Five Ways to Avoid a C-section-CNN Article

I so agree with this article. My former OB-GYN was inducement happy!! He was sugguesting it a month before DS was due. I did not want a C -section b/c I had recent ovary surgery and was aware of the horrible recovery time.

I stuck to my guns. DS was 9 days late and my doc was insinuating it would be still born!!! I had a vaginal delivery and he was only 6 lbs 13oz.

My thing was this...if my dr could not give me a MEDICAL reason to get induced...i wouldnt

I think it is great to be educated either way and to know what your rights are. But at the same time, you need to follow medical advice as well.

I was induced, and I delivered vaginally. I was induced due to preeclampsia.

Re: Five Ways to Avoid a C-section-CNN Article

A C-section was my big fear and with my second I was induced on my due date (due to some issues that arose during the pregnancy). I knew that the induction alone put me at a greater risk for a section and because of this refused the epidural until I was 4 cm dilated (because I didn't want to do anything to slow labor). I was lucky, that I dilated and my delivery was fairly easy.

I did however, during the pregnancy stress to my OB that, my preference, unless medically necessary, was to deliver vaginally. In fact, 5 days before I delivered, she was set to put me in and induce me. My husband and I were waiting in the outer office listening to her make the arrangements with the hospital on the phone when she stopped and called us in. She said to me that she didn't believe I was ready to deliver and that at that point in the pregnancy both the baby and I were healthy, and she wanted to hold off a few days and see what would happen. I really believe that decision saved me a section. As a prior poster said, if the baby's health is in jeopardy, you do whatever is necessary. However, if all are healthy, I don't believe the words "elective and "surgery" should ever be used in the same sentence.

crap--thats insane..my c sections were
#1--over 30 hours of labor--failure too progress---couldnt finish dilating and a posterior baby
#2--emergency==knocked out with a gas mask---dd heart rate dropped...come to find out Ii had a abnormal shaped pelvis and would never pass a baby...
#3--twins--and no way can pass a baby..and if i tried would rupture my uterus...
what really sucked was with my dd #2 pregnancy-I walked in 10 centimeters dilated!
