Fleas - Need Advice!
Last Friday, I noticed a flea on my cat and immediately treated him and began a psychotic cleaning spree. I haven't seen much in teh past few days, so hopefully they are gone, but I am trying to figure out how i got them. My cat is an indoor cat, and we haven't had anyone here lately that has any animals. The only thing i can think of is that we have three ladies come here every other week to clean and they insist on using their own vacuum. Our cat is 6 and has never had fleas until 2 days after they came to clean. I have no proof, but do I have them return next week, or end it with them just in case? I cannot keep up my flea regimen forever!

Fleas - Need Advice!
I would end it unless they use your vacuum!

Re: Fleas - Need Advice!
1st of all...contain your cat...use borax powder on all carpets and upholstery, let it sit then vacuum up. Use eucalyptus and tea tree oil spray on bed linens after washing you can also use those on your cat. then re-bathe the cat and then insist they use your vacuum or at the very least make sure it's emptied out before use and filter cleaned out.

Re: Fleas - Need Advice!
It can ABSOLUTELY be coming from their vacuums. I guarantee you that is where they came from. Is your cat on any kind of flea medicine? I would get to the vet asap and have them give you something. Fleas, even if one alone was on your pet, will likely cause an infestation if the pet was not on flea meds.
When a vacuum picks up fleas, they can jump back out. That is why when people have flea infestations it is recommended to remove the bag outside and seal it up in a garbage bag, and put a new bag in every time you vacuum, to dispose of the fleas caught in the bag. Bagless are even worse regarding fleas, due to the fact that there is no bag to contain fleas!
Honestly, I hate to scare anyone, but when you use a cleaning person who uses vacuums in every one else's homes, they can bring you fleas, bedbugs, roaches, etc, anything that is being picked up by their vacuum. That is why cleaning people in my home would simply skeeve me. I rather clean my home myself half asssed than have some random person bring a vacuum that has been in a million homes.
Do not let them come back! Never let anyone use any vacuum in your home other than your own!

Oh i know. I just found out that they use their own vacuum bc i am at work when they are usually there. I have medicated the cat, boraxed the rugs, vacuumed every day, emptied the container int eh toilet or outside and left the vacuum outside. The cat seems clean, but the poor thing has been sequestered for the past week bc I am afraid to let him roam freely. Bug infestations of all types skeeve me out. I think I am cancelling them bc I just know that is where they came from. Thanks for the advice. Wish we luck in getting rid of all of the little buggers!

What medication did you use? This is very important info. Be very careful, some things can harm cats, and you cannot just use various things together or they could harm your cat (in case you did not know).
You def should not be emptying the container into the toilet. Fleas can jump right out. You should be emptying it outside into a large bag and sealing it. But honestly, you use the proper flea medicine, that is the first step in preventing an infestation. That's why I ask what did you use?
And you actually should NOT be sequestering your cat. If you use the proper flea medication prescribed by a vet, you WANT your cat to attract any fleas that may be lingering in the home so they will jump on your cat and be killed. Whatever fleas that have gotten into your home are better off on your cat to die (if you use the proper flea meds for cats, again) than to bite a human.
Also, keep in mind, some things can be harmful to your cat, and your children, so I would not go crazy with poisons, powders, etc. Even some of the powders can be harmful if inhaled.

Re: Fleas - Need Advice!
here's an article about borax. Borax should definitely be safe to use...but just to be safe thats why i say keep the cat contained...at least while you are treating the other areas of your home and have the powder down. Once everything has been vacuumed up and treated as well as your cat, I would let her roam freely or give her an area. My dog used to sleep in my bed, so when she got fleas I definitely did not allow her in my bed until I knew there were absolutely no more fleas. Especially now that I have a baby she's not allowed on the second floor (where our bedrooms are) if i see even one flea. She's had them maybe 3 times but once was really bad!

Ita with you. This is great advice. The only thing that really works is proper flea medication from a vet and only from a vet. Do not separate your cat. She will be what kills the fleas and breaks the cycle. You can clean forever but you will never get rid of them until you get frontline or advantage for your cat.
ITA, of course OP making sure the vet approves of what the cat takes. Some of the flea meds are not for cats, or cats under a certain age/weight, etc.

But I do believe it's a hazard if inhaled, same with diamatious earth powder.
