Flooring in the basement?
Part of our basement is finsihed. This weekend I painted it and it and it looks 100 times better.
The only thing that makes it ugly is the carpet. The previous owners kept their dogs in the basement and also it was used as a playroom so the carpet has paint, food stains and some mystery markings all over it.
My mom suggested pulling up the carpet and painting the concrete floor. We want to set the basement up as a sitting area/guest bedroom so we would put rugs down if it was a concrete floor.
What do you think keep the flooring as is or paint the floor?
We have so many other projects we need to spend money on. We are trying to work with what we have for the basement otherwise we would put a new floor down.

Re: Flooring in the basement?
How about ripping up the carpet, painting the floor and just getting an oversized area rug in the meantime? OR you can put down a carpet remnant until you decide what you want to do? It'd be much cheaper that way.

I agree, paint the floor and get one of those 6X9 area rugs Home Depot always has for sale (usually like $20 or $30 I think)....that will hold you over until you have money to spend for a new wall to wall carpet if need be later on.

Thanks ladies for your input
I was thinking that would be the best thing I just didn't know if it was crazy pulling up wall to wall carpeting.
My mom is buying a new rug for her house so she will give me her old one. I love when mom goes shopping I always do well in the hand me down department.

NICE! It'll look great. Don't put too much thought into it. once it's all completed, it'll look terrific!

Re: Flooring in the basement?
if the current rug is of decent quality, i would have it professionally deep cleaned. get an estimate prior to doing so and ask their advice in re: to if they feel the stains can be removed.

I agree! We might be doing the same thing. And you are getting an area rug for free....even better. The paint won't cost to much and then the room will be done. Nice!

Re: Flooring in the basement?
Get some advice about which paint to use. My dad used to paint the basement floor - one year it peeled in patches because of the paint he used and he had problems with peeling from that point on.

Re: Flooring in the basement?
You can pull up the carpet and buy very nice, inexpensive tile from Home Depot or Lowes and lay that down. My friends just did that and their basement is really comfortable. You really don't have to spend a lot for that.

Re: Flooring in the basement?
you can also buy the peal and stick carpeting to lay down. Its not the best, but it will give some warmth to the floor. Its really easy to do and not expensive at all.
