Flu shot and babies
Ds is 6 months old. We're going for his checkup tomorrow and they mentioned giving him the flu shot, if we wanted.
I'm on the fence.
What did you girls do? I've heard that a lot of kids could have a reaction to it, so i'm nervous since my kid seems to always have a problem!

Re: Flu shot and babies
DD is 7 months. I didn't do it. If she was in a daycare, I would have considered it. But, she is watched in home and is the only child-so I decided against it.

Re: Flu shot and babies
We did do the flu shot and I am sooo glad I did. DH got the flu right after thanksgiving and DS was fine, never even a sniffle.
The split it into 2 shots for babies...the first one DS had no reaction, the second I dotn think he had a reaction but he was getting a cold at the time we had the shot and within 48 hours he was full blown congestion, etc. But I dont think it really had to do with teh shot, rather he was already sick.

Re: Flu shot and babies
DD got it last year at 6 months and again this year. I know it doesn't prevent 100% of the strains of the flu (much less than that, actually), but I was comfortable in my decision for her to get it, since I wanted to do as much as possible to prevent her from getting the flu. She doesn't go to daycare, MIL watches her, but still...she's exposed to a lot of germs at playdates, stores, etc.
VERY personal decision, you have to go with what you're comfortable with
ETA: Last year, when she got the first dose, she had a slight fever afterwards. Same with the second dose last year...but just a slight fever, for a few hours, that was it.

We didn't. Both Dh and I agree that we don't see a need for the flu shot. We don't get it either.

Re: Flu shot and babies
Nick had his 6 month visit on Saturday and I got him the flu shot. He's not in daycare, but we are always around other kids. Also, I work in the city and take mass transit (LIRR & Subway), so I feel like I'm a walking petri dish.
He did get a little fever, but he also had 2 other shots that day. So it could have been from that. He's also teething - so who knows.

Re: Flu shot and babies
Totally a personal choice. We did not get it ever for DD or DS since he was born. Just don't find it necessary. They are not in daycare, my mother watches them, but we do go out a lot, etc. They both have been generally healthy!

Re: Flu shot and babies
I gave DD the flu shot, only because she is in daycare 5 days a week. She had no reaction to it.

Re: Flu shot and babies
DS got his flu shot at 6 months and then we had to bring him in again for a booster at 7 months. He had no reactions. DH and I didn't hesitate because both of us work with children on a regular basis, and DS goes to daycare.

DS received it at 6 months and the booster at his 9 month visit. No effects at all.

Re: Flu shot and babies
Kayla got the flu shot at 6 months...I was on the fence about it too...but she goes to a babysitter with other children so I felt it was important. If she was just home with me...I probably wouldn't have done it.

Re: Flu shot and babies
I will definitely do it next month if the ped. recommends it (if it's still considered flu season)...her older sister is in school, so she could be exposed...
I'm a teacher, and I gave it to DD#1 when she was a baby because I could have exposed her...

Re: Flu shot and babies
I will do it when the time comes just because there is the strong possibility that I will be exposed to the flu at work. I don't want to chance bringing it home to him.

i got the flu shot for both of my kids...we are around alot of other children and DD is in preschool. they were more at risk to catching the flu so i wanted to protect them. My kids did not get a reaction, the most common is a fever and the dr will tell you to just give tylenol, no biggie. In my opinion i felt it would be worse for my kids to catch the flu and if they got a simple fever i was ready to handle that. there are so many kids hospitalized each year from the flu so i felt it was neccesary to get the vaccine.

Re: Flu shot and babies
Yeah see i'd rather not have ds have any unnecessary shots and given that it doesn't protect against all strains...
but on the other hand, ds is around his cousin (who's a year and a half) all the time and i know how easily kids pass things to eachother.
I guess i better get it just in case. I would hate to not get it and then he gets the flu...

Julia never had a reaction to the flu shot each year she got it, Todd Jr got his when he was 6 months and never got a reaction also. The flu is so contagious, I wouldn't chance it.
