Flu Shot During pregnancy
My Dr. keeps telling me to get it. I haven't gotten it in years, like more than 15 years probably. I haven't had the flu since i was a child. I have noproblem getting it after my LO is born, but not sure how comfortable i am getting it now.
My OBGYn is pestering me to get it.
Did anyone else get it? Or is anyone else hesitant about getting it during pregnancy? I know its safe...but still on the fence about this...

Re: Flu Shot During pregnancy
My OB is very liberal and laid back. In most cases he tells me the outer limits of what I can do and then tells me to do what feels comfortable for me. When it came to the flu shot, though, he told me that I MUST get it. He told me that the potential impact of the flu on both me and the baby greatly outweighs the risk of getting the shot. He also said that pregnant women who get the flu often also end up getting pneumonia because their immune system has trouble fighting the flu.
I was very surprised at this and my immediate reaction was that I didn't want it. But I did a lot of research and it seems like everyone - including the March of Dimes and CDC - agrees that the flu shot is necessary for pregnant women.
After doing a lot of research I decided that I would get the flu shot as long as it was preservative free (no thimerosol, etc.). I was able to get a preservative free flu shot (afluria) at Rite Aid. I did it early in the 2nd trimester. I've had no adverse reaction and baby has been perfect so far (almost 23 weeks along).

Re: Flu Shot During pregnancy
i got it while pregnant because my primary care physician and OB both recommend it. they have a preservative free version for pregnant women that is supposed to be safer.
I had one cold before i got the flu shot and i was miserable! i cannot imagine actually having the flu while pregnant so I am grateful i got the shot and hope it helps me out this winter

Re: Flu Shot During pregnancy
With each of my pregnancies, it was suggested that I get it, but each time I declined.

Re: Flu Shot During pregnancy
I received the flu shot a few weeks ago. Happy that I did, now that my DS and DH both have the flu. DS was due to get his shot this week..ugh. DH doesn't want to get it, but I think with Feb. newborns in the house he MUST!

Re: Flu Shot During pregnancy
I went to the doc today (my rheumatologist, not OB), but she said if I haven't already had it, not to get it now (I'm newly pregnant). She also mentioned that she had the flu shot and STILL got the flu 2 weeks ago! (so she thinks this year's strain of flu is resistant to the shot anyway). I would say if you decide to get it have the one without mercury (thimerosol free I think it's called?)

Re: Flu Shot During pregnancy
I just got mine last night. Both my OB and my sister (also an OB) highly recommended it. I am a teacher and kids are already outo f school with confirmed flu cases and I don't want to risk it. I trust my doctor whole heartedly so I got the mercury free version at CVS.

Flu Shot During pregnancy
My OB recommended I go to my PCP and get the preservative free shot but I've never ever gotten the shot and had the flu once about 12 years ago, I'm too afraid to get it while pregnant, I'm 30 weeks so I will wait until I deliver and then get it.

Re: Flu Shot During pregnancy
I got one from my OB at my 20w appt. As I said in another post, it's much safer for both you and the baby to get the flu vaccine than to get the actual flu. I've never had any side effects from getting teh flu vaccine, and the same was true with this one while pregnant.

Flu Shot During pregnancy
I actually have never goteen a flue shot. I got one in the office because the benefits seemed to outweigh the cost....especially since I work with kids all day.
