Food Aversions
I know they say this is common in the first trimester, but I feel so sick all the time. I am eating like crap, but its because the thought of eating a salad, vegetables or fruit makes me want to throw up. I used to love all seafood (dont eat chicken or meat). Now, the thought of fish makes me want to throw-up too. I am not kidding, but the only things I want to eat are bagels and pizza. That's it.
Does this get better in the 2nd trimester? Are you guys having food issues like this too?
If I ask my DH to have pizza for dinner for the next 9 months he is going to kill me.

Re: Food Aversions
Hi Lynn,
I had the same thing. I find it very hard to eat veggies and I LOVE veggies normally. The only "veggie" I can eat are Tomatoes and some salad but not cooked veggies. Love bread, pasta, pizza and plain food....also love certain types of soup - actually tomato soup now that I think of it...... Best thing I found is that I lost my sweet tooth but have been told I will find it again before the pregnancy is over. Keep taking the prenatal tablets and as long as you are not eating pizza three times a day you should be okay...hey maybe you could get a veggie pizza
Also be careful with the seafood thing during pregnancy as I am sure you know - no shellfish and they say only 12oz of fish a week.
good luck and hang in there.

Re: Food Aversions
hehe - that sounds so familiar. In the middle of my first trimester i was so queasy all day long - 2 of my favorite foods were bagels (which I normal barely eat) and pizza - until I gagged on a bagel - then that was off the list. Luckily fruit was one healthy thing I could eat (which may have helped lead to my GD down the road - I am convinced since I ate so much fruit). For me it was eat what I could because if I don't eat - I felt sicker.
It did fade for me...but eventually I went back to normal - kind of. New cravings did come into play - like cereal and beef and shrimp but it would be for short periods where I could eat it everyday if I could. For my entire pregnancy I could barely eat chicken or pork unless it was smothered and hidden like in a ton of cheese.

You pretty much summed up my diet ever since I found out I was PG .. the ONLY thing I can eat without gagging is bread, pizza (but with VERY little sauce, if any at all) and plain rice/potatoes. NO MEAT or FISH (though I hated fish anyhow) and no fruit or veggies...
Yesterday all I ate was a bagel in the morning and a donut at night.. some balanced diet, huh?

Re: Food Aversions
I've felt the same way - lately all I truly enjoy eating is carbs - im loving the pizza, pasta, rice and potatoes and fruits but not the biggest fan of anything on the BBQ right now - have absolutely no desire to eat a steak and absolutely will not eat garlic and oil pasta and shesh-kabobs ever again - at least not for the rest of this pregnancy.
I made garlic and oil pasta and shesh-kabobs during the first weeks of my pregnancy and the pure smell of the garlic and broiled meat - literally made me want to puke!!

Re: shellfish Q.
My doc just told me no shellfish but I would check with yours to see what he/she says.
Here is an article that I found on this subject. Hope it helps!!There are so many things to learn in this process....I didnt know I coudlnt have cheeses such as brie, goat cheese etc....you learn a little every day. ------------------------------------------------------ Fish with Mercury: Fish that contain high levels of mercury should be avoided. Mercury consumed during pregnancy has been linked to developmental delays and brain damage. A sample of these types of fish include: shark, swordfish, kink mackerel, fresh tuna, sea bass, and tilefish. Canned, chunk, light tuna generally has less amounts of mercury than other tuna, but you should not eat more than 12 oz. in a week. Certain types of fish used in sushi should also be avoided due to high levels of mercury. Please see Mercury in Fish for specific types of fish and further information on how to calculate mercury levels.
Fish exposed to Industrial Pollutants: Avoid fish from contaminated lakes and rivers that may be exposed to high levels of polychlorinated biphyenyls. This is primarily for those who fish in local lakes and streams. These fish include: blue fish, striped bass, salmon, pike, trout, and walleye. Contact the local health department or Environmental Protection Agency to determine which fish are safe to eat in your area. Remember, this is regarding fish caught in local waters and not fish from your local grocery store.
Raw Shellfish: The majority of seafood borne illness is caused by undercooked shellfish, which include oysters, clams, and mussels. Cooking helps prevent some types of infection, but it does not prevent the algae-related infections that are associated with red tides. Raw shellfish pose concern for everybody and they should be avoided altogether during pregnancy.

My dr had said shellfish is 100% fine to eat of course in moderation like anything else. Often shellfish is raw or not fully cooked or cooked properly - that is what you want to stay away from. I ate it plenty when I was preggo.

Re: Food Aversions
Ohhh yes, I remember the days! I usually have the healthiest diet - I'm a vegetarian (but I eat fish) so most days I would have cheerios for breakfast with soy milk, some fruit in the mid morning, a salad in the afternoon, and some salmon or tilapia for dinner with veggies. Yes, well, all that went right out the window during the first and second trimesters! I couldn't eat ANYTHING healthy. THe thought of eating any of the foods I usually ate sickened me... the only things I could muster were carbs, and the greasy ones were best. I can't even tell you how many grilled cheese sandwiches I ate during the first trimester!
It did get better with time... around 16 or 17 weeks my aversions went away and (mostly) I'm back to my old way of eating. And, YES, I eat fish, though no tuna and I try not to eat too much shellfish - only once in a while. As they say, everything in moderation and you'll be ok...
