Foods to help with constipation, for a one year child who feeds themself ?

My DDs constipation is sooooo bad, esp since we switched to whole milk.

Can anyone recommend foods for a one year old that will help with constipation and that they can feed themself?

I am so tired of my poor baby suffering and not being able to eat the foods she loves.Chat Icon

Sasha is 10.5 months-- and we do half and half for feeding... She wouldn't take pureed prunes?

I also give Sasha prune juice mixed with 2 oz of BM. I started with 1 tablespoon, now she needs 3 to keep her regular.

You can also give her whole prunes cut up.

Charlotte didn't take to prunes but she loved (and still does) pears...they are gentler but just as effective as prunes. Apricots, peaches and grapes work as well.

DS is 18 months and when he is constipated I try ripe pears, strawberries, melon. I've just started giving him the natural apple juice - the dark one. I gave him an ounce or two mixed with water and it seemed to work. DH wanted me to give him his dried prunes but I think they are a choking hazard at this point.

She used to love them but not anymore...plus she isn't keen on being spoon fed anymore at this age. So that limits me.

Only thing I can do is maybe mix prune juice with milk and try that, b/c she hates reg prune juice.

This sucks.Chat Icon

Maybe I can try strawberries...I have tried pears. She has been eating pears forever. She has big time constipation issues....if Miralax doesnt help dr wants her to see the GI dr.

I gotta up her fruits and see what happens.

Just spoke with ped. We had to use Miralax to see if that helps for now. But its bad. I hope nothing is wrong. B/c if the Miralax doesn't help, we have to see the GI dr. Her poop is so hard, it won't even come out...it's terrrible how she is suffering.Chat Icon

She has been eating lentil soup and sweet potatoes...and as much fiber is in them isnt helping. It has gotten bad since we switched to whole milk.

DS has had constipation issues since birth and cut up apples really seem to help him (not applesauce, that is binding). When he was younger we'd give him straight prunes and it wouldn't do any good. Since we have gotten to the self feed phase the apples have made a huge difference in him - he goes everyday now Chat Icon

Mandarin orange Dole fruit cups. They are so soft all you have to do is cut them in half. They keep my 1 y old regular Chat Icon Also water--offer a few ounces of water between meals in a sippy....

Oh I also give him grapes cut up in quarters. I notice that the more non stone fruits he eats the more regular he is. He was much better in the summer when these fruits were easier to buy. Once he starting eating more apples and bananas was when he starting having poop issues.
Hope the Miralax works quickly! I know it's tough waiting around for that poop! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you so much. What do you mean non stone fruits? Meaning no pits inside?

Well she did poop...it was sooo hard....so dry. The Miralax didnt do it, it was too soon. But I know we will go through this again tomorrow. Its EVERYDAY since we started whole milk that her stool is hard as a rock.

I know it's my fault that I dont give her enough fruits but its hard when you dont have them in the house and cant get to the store. I have frozen strawberries, never gave them to her before. I may try them this week and DH brought home some pears so I will give her those tomorrow if they are ripe enough.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Thank you all.Chat Icon

Aww poor baby, I'm glad she went. Even if it's hard, it's better that she goes everyday rather than misses a few days!
For DS, once the summer fruits weren't as available, and stone fruits - apples, and pears were the were the seasonal fruits, his poop changed. It did change a little once we went to milk, but not that badly. I know apples work for some, but for DS, he was eating an apple a day and still had hard poops. And he loves bananas but they are supposed to be binding so I try not to give them to him unless I already know he's more regular. It is so tough with the fruit unless you have it i the house. A PP mentioned the mandarain oranges, DS just started eating those - so maybe try fruit cups too! They have peaches. I've never tried the frozen fruit but that may work too. If you can get to Trader Joes, their fruit is reasonable and sometimes they have berries and kiwis and melons.
Good luck!
Oh and to make the pears ripen more quickly, put them in a brown bag.

Grapes, raisins, pears....you can even try giving her pieces of those Fiber One bars.

Or, buy Fiber One english muffins/bagels and give them to her for breakfast.

Anything with fiber will help alleviate it.

You can even try adding flax seed to whatever she eats. It's tasteless and will definitely help with constipation.
