Foot in mouth moments

Ok, admit it. Who's had them?!?!

Well now I can say I have. I just mistook a dad for a grandpa! He was not happy either. I'm normally so so good about keeping my mouth shut and not assuming mom vs nanny vs grandma, dad vs grandpa. It's like I have Tourette's all of a sudden with pregnancy.

In my defense, it is a second marriage and he already has a daughter in her early 20s..so he could have been the grandfather of this two year old Chat Icon

Foot in mouth moments

Hahahaha, I do it ALL THE TIME... and I do it on here, too Chat Icon I feel like sometimes I gut react to something and then I'm like oh nope shouldn't have said/written that. My father could be easily mistaken for my sister's grandfather - she's 16, he's 60, I was 16 when she was born, if he had me at 21, I could easily have had a 16 year old by the time he was 60. (Also a second marriage).

Re: Foot in mouth moments

oh I had a bad one.....I was picking my daughter up for girl scouts and asked WHEN THIS WOMAN WAS DUE
she is NOT PREGNANT
to make matters worse she said oh Im still hanging on to the baby weight lol....so I said aww how old old is your baby ..... she said 4 years old
I couldn't think of anything else to say so there was UNCOMFORTABLE SILENCE for a while after

in my defense she looked like 9 1/2 months pregnant and started off the conversation with I am glad I made it on time to grab my daughter its hard lately with all these changes going on and I have no idea what my schedule will be soon ya know?
she was referring to her husbands hours at work changed and she works late

I've definitely had these moments.

and I always have a hard time figuring out if someone is the mom or grandma!!! I just try not to say anything.

but I've seen people at the park that I would bet anything it has to be the grandma and the 2 year old runs over yelling mommy. so I never assume

Yup ME!
I was away from maternity leave and when I returned I introduced myself to a new co-worker we had some small talk. He was middle age with grey hair. I saw a picture of him and a bride and said "Awww is that your daughter" he laughed and said "no that's my wife". I was soooo embarrassed I must of apologized 100x.

Foot in mouth moments

Ugh- still think about when I was 9 months pregnant with DS1 I went to a bagel store where the woman knew me from being in there so often. She asked how I was and I would say how tired I was daily. One day she told me she never had to deal with the end of pregnancy because her daughter was born at 28 weeks. My response, "you're lucky" which OF COURSE I didn't mean, but I was just giving generic responses to small talk. I felt so bad after :(

Not from me but from others! My husband got mistaken for my grandfather once, my father numerous times. I'm 31 and he's 40.

In his defense, I've also been mistaken for 12 on more than one occasion!

Re: Foot in mouth moments

I was on the end of the pregnancy one recently.

Last weeknd I went to pick up a pizza at our local place down the block. I was wearing a flowy tunic type top.

This older man was talking with the girl behind the counter who I guess can't eat spicy food. He turns to me and said how are you dealing with that? Pregnant women can't eat spicy either huh?

I said to him I'm not pregnant.

The girl behind the counter was mortified and said not to take it personally because he's drunk half the time and says inappropriate things to everyone.

It has made me re-think what I wear though. Chat Icon

I twice had people tell me, Oh, one on the hip and one on the way!

Nope. It was just leftover pregnancy weight after each child.

Ding ding ding! The rule is you never ask a woman about her pregnancy unless she tells you she is pregnant or you see a baby crowning! Chat Icon

Walking back to the car after leaving the supermarket I said to my boys "Let's go home now. Daddy's waiting for us!"

Just as a father from our daycare walks past us whom his wife just filed for divorce.

I will never forget, I was 13 camping with my family at a lake. My sister and I met two very nice girls and wound up playing all week with them. One of the last days we were swimming in the lake and the girls were doing piggy back races in the lake, the one girl only had one arm and the other arm ended before the elbow... She threw her arms in the air and i said, look MA, no hands... I wanted to drown myself bc I only meant it as I said it bc she wasn't holding on...

Re: Foot in mouth moments

This was really bad. It was my first FT job in an office. I was 19 and had gotten very close with my boss who was about 7 years older. She was talking to another friend and our big boss (a guy) & mentioned "deep throat"--well my gutter mind went to the wrong place & I made some sort of joke & was then mortified as they were talking about Watergate. They busted my chops for a while & said she's not so sweet after all.

Re: Foot in mouth moments

I have a funny one that still makes me laugh when I think about it.

It was like 10-12 years ago and I was some friends getting a pedicure at, of course, an asian nail place.

One friend was talking about how her friend was pregnant and we were talking about baby names and somehow the name Aiden came up. And I said, "everyone is naming their child Aiden lately!" and then I INTENDED to say,

"In 18 years there will be a million Aidens graduating from HS"

but what I REALLY said was,

"In 18 years there will be a million ASIANS graduating from HS."

Unsure if they were even paying attention, but I wanted to die. But it makes me laugh every time I think about it.

Re: Foot in mouth moments

I have one but it wasn't said out loud- it's something I sent out on an invitation to an entire wedding's worth of people.

In high school, my BFF "J" dated a guy whose name started with a T. They dated for YEARS. J and T, J and T, J and T. That's how I knew her.

BFF breaks it off with "T" while I was away at college and starts dating a guy "P". Whirlwind romance, quickly engaged and quickly getting married.

I'm her MOH and planning a Jack/Jill party. Mothers of the bride and groom want to do a dual wishing well - bride should receive items for the kitchen, groom should receive items for the garage. I had friends proofread the invite - and I sent it out to 100 people.

the mother of the bride calls me hysterically laughing one day. Says she received the invite and thinks I did a great job but would like me to look it over one more time because she received a few phone calls of concern.

I looked again at the invite and it looked fine until you got the to part about the wishing well. "Please also bring a spice or something nice for "J" and don't forget a tool for T's tool box.

T was the bride's ex BF. Chat Icon I wanted to crawl away and never go to the wedding or see anyone else again. Invites were sent to over 100 people!!
