Re: Foot massage

My lamaze teacher said leg massages and foot massages werent really good for prego ladies... but not sure if she meant by dh or professional.

If your going to have a pedi.. just make sure you dont shave your legs the same day you get.. I was told that makes you more accessible to an infection which is no good for prego.

Re: Foot massage

No foot massages. It can cause a miscarriage or premature labor. My spa required a doctors note. My doctor specifically emphasized NO FOOT MASSAGES in the note. lol

Re: Foot massage

i only heard that the ankle area shouldn't be massaged because there are trigger points there that can stimulate contractions

Re: Foot massage

To clarify the reason why it is NOT recommended. There are some points, especially the ankle area which "could" induce labor. But being based on Tradition Chinese Medicine you also need an "intent" in order for it to work. So a light massage on a the foot is most likely not going to start labor and you should stay clear of the ankle area.

Reflexology is completely contraindicated because of the nature of the work regardless of the pressure.

A "light" foot massage is OK. You just don't massage a particular spot and stay on it for hours. A general "feel good" light pressure massage is relaxing and could also help with the swelling.

Pedicures are totally OK.

Again, your dr is best to ask.

Also make sure you see a massage therapist who is certified in pregnancy massage. They learned a lot more about pregnancy, contraindications, how to massage a PG woman, special considerations and issues while PG than just a "regular" massage therapist.

Re: Foot massage

My SIL went for a massage when she was pregnant and they told her they could not massage her ankles or feet for the first three, or last three months of pregnancy. They said there are pressure points around the ankle area that can cause contractions.
