For any St. Charles ladies-guest related
I went for lamaze class yesterday, and for some reason, the hot topic was about guests coming to visit. Everyone was trying to figure out how they would get people up to the room to visit. We were told that they are starting to enforce new guest rules and will be strict within the next week. I wanted to share in case anyone wanted to know. Here they are:
Significant Other 10:00 am - 10:00 pm There are also 2 private rooms. DH can sleep over in the room if you have a private room-but not in a 2 person room. It is not first come first serve when you walk in and put your name on the list. It is first come first serve when you deliver your baby. So once you deliver, if the room is available, you can have it for $200 a night. If there is someone in the room already, you can be put on a waiting list, and if they leave for the second or third day you are there, you may be able to get the room.
The way they fill up the rooms, is that they put one mom in each room, and THEN they start putting a second mom in the room once all the rooms have one person in it. So if it is not busy, you may still luck out with your own room.
One other note about the rooms, they are getting rid of the vcr's in the room, so if you want to watch tapes/dvd's they said for you to bring a portable DVD player and hook it up with cables you bring to the tv itself. They do have regular cable though...but no HBO.
Grandparents and siblings of the newborn 2:00 - 4:00 pm
They will give 4 passes to go up to the labor and delivery and maternity wards for each baby. This does not include your DH. The remaining people will have to wait downstairs in the main waiting room until someone brings a pass down.
Only 4 people at a time. If they are not a grandparent of sibling, they will not be allowed to see you. If they suspect they are not old enough to be a grandmother, they will be asked to leave. Only siblings of the baby are allowed up. Not YOUR siblings. Babies are in the room with grandparents and siblings for 'bonding time'.
Open visiting 7:00 - 8:00 pm At the regular visiting hours at night, again only 4 passes will be given out. Babies are in the nursery the entire time so that they do not get germs.

Meh! This is the only reason I am really leaning towards stony brook instead!
One hour at night is so little time to squeeze in family and friends!

Wow- I guess things have changed since I had my DS in '05, if they really do enforce it...Those were the same rules as back then but no-one ever even looked twice- it was a free for all

That's what everyone thought...but they said they are buckling down.

Re: For any St. Charles ladies-guest related
I will be at St. Charles but honestly, I'm totally ok with the visiting hours. I think it's great that the grandparents get to come up at a special time and get to be with the baby and 2 hrs. is plenty I think. And at night, I have a ton of family and it will be hard BUT realize, you're only in the hospital a short time and then you're home where everyone can come see the baby. I know myself well enough to know that I will be exhausted after L&D and it's kind of nice to know I won't have people visiting all hours of the day, it's too much. Like I said, my house will be a zoo once the baby arrives home so I like that I can take advantage of some quiet time in the hospital with DH. Just my opinion though.

I agree, the visiting hours are fine for me as well...I'll let the family duke it out downstairs.

I agree with you both. I delivered there last year, and apparently they're getting more strict. Before I delivered, I thought it was horrible that it was only 1 hour for general visitation, and that the baby wasn't in the room. But once I was there and experiencing it, I loved it. Not just b/c of your family's germs, but if you have a roommate, who knows what kind of germs they're bringing in too, you know? So it was nice that DD was in the nursery. And 1 hour was plenty of time to see everyone, for them to see DD in the nursery, and them to leave so we could mellow out some more.
The "grandparents/sibling" hours are kind of annoying, IMO. DD has only 2 grandparents (my mom & my MIL)...and I know others have not only all 4, but sometimes step-grandparents too. Thankfully, when I was there, we were able to have my sister and DH's brother in during those hours too, so they could at least see & hold the baby. No one said anything to us about them, but it sounds like they're trying to get more strict.

That's EXACTLY what DH and I said. I'm not going to concern myself with who gets up there and for how long. I'll see who I see and just concern myself with recovering and preparing to go home.

Re: For any St. Charles ladies-guest related
I am delivering at St. Charles and I am comfortable with the visiting. I know that there will be 100 people coming and going once we get home, so it will be nice to get some time to rest. The lamaze instructor/nurse from St. Charles said that St. Charles did a survey of former patients and this was the time schedule the patients wanted so that mommy and daddy had time to rest and be with the baby without 100 people coming in. She also said that this is a new policy and most hospitals on LI will be converting to this policy within the next few months or year. I know a lot of Nassau hospitals already have this policy in place.

I am not delivering there but I don't see why they are limiting the 7-8pm visiting hour to 4 guests at a time. The babies are not in the room...I don't see what the big deal is.
I am glad I am delivering at Stony Brook. I enjoyed having visitors at the hospital.

Re: For any St. Charles ladies-guest related
I delivered at st.charles the last two times and I thought they were strict to begin with..I think changing the grandparents visiting hours to be even more strict and if they dont look old enough to be grandparents they cant go in well what is the age..my FIL who is 34 hes a grandparent and hes almost the same age as my brother..I dont think that is very fair.. I guess I should be happy that this time around my doctor is making me go to stony brook.

I like the limiting of 4 guests, it's more for the mother because the baby is in the nursery. My BFF delivered there last summer and I have to say, it did get a little crazy during visiting hours because there was no limit to the # of people who were able to come up in that hour. At one point there was at least 20 people in there visiting (along with however many visitors were also in the room for her roommate) and it was overwhelming and tiring for her. She had just been through a C-section and pre-eclampsia and she was wiped out so it was hard to deal with so many people in the room.
My feeling is, who cares what the policy is at the hospital. You are there for such a very short time and the reality is before you know you will be home and the whole world can (and will!!) be at your house all day, every day to see you and the baby. I like the idea of limiting visiting so that I can get some rest after delivery and so DH and I can spent some quality time together and with the baby without having to deal with a gazillion people. That's just my opinion though.

Re: For any St. Charles ladies-guest related
My cousin's wife just delivered at St Charles last week. They are starting to hand out passes, but they do not have a restriction on how many people can go up.
I delivered at St Charles in January and it was so nice that all my family could come up. I have a lot of family and it would have been a pain if only 4 people could come up at a time. I loved having people visiting me. JMHO.

I just delivered there 3/28 and they weren't strict at all with the visiting hours. It may have changed since then but I had about 8-10 people during the 2-4 hours.

The Labor and Delivery nurse said it's a new policy that they are just starting to institute so you're right, back in March it wasn't as restrictive.

Re: For any St. Charles ladies-guest related
I just delivered last week- i really loved the policy- my friend delivered a few months ago and we both noticed they were much more strict this time...
they did hand out passes, but did not keep track of how many per baby...
I also got really lucky and had no roommate for 3 of the 4 days that I was there... although i loved having visitors, the policy really helped me get rest and both DH & I to have time to spend together and with the baby... i dont think i would have been able to handle visitors just being able to come and go... besides, once you get home, visitors can come and go as they please and actually see & hold the baby-it really isnt too much fun to just stare at them through glass...
my family was shocked that DH couldnt spend the night with us, but it was for the better, because he was able to go home and get rest instead of sleeping on some chair or pull out couch- once we all got home, it was much better to have a well rested DH then to have both of us being exhausted!
I also got one of the BEST sandwiches ever from there- their food menu is like a restaurant... and most of the nurses (especially the night ones, and the one i had in labor&delivery) were amazing
