For anyone interested...the response from Enfamil regarding the use of corn syrup solids in Gentlease

Dear Ms. Jessica XXXXXX:

Corn syrup solids are not the same as corn syrup or high-fructose corn syrup.

Corn syrup and high-fructose corn syrup have a sweet taste. The corn syrup solids we put in our infant formulas have a sweetness level similar to lactose, the main carbohydrate in breast milk.

Corn syrup solids are included in some of our infant formulas as a source of carbohydrate. They are often used to replace lactose in our lactose-free formulas.

Corn syrup solids provide energy for the body and are readily digestible.

Corn syrup solids were chosen as the carbohydrate source for reasons of taste and impact on formula tolerance. The corn syrup solids used in our formulas help result in a formula with carbohydrate level, taste, and tolerance similar to human milk.

If you have further questions or would prefer to speak with us in person, please call us toll-free at 1-800-222-9123. Choose menu option 1 (Enfamil® Family of Formulas), then menu option 2 (Medical or Quality Concern). We are available Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Central Time and Saturday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, excluding holidays. When you call, please explain that you originally contacted Mead Johnson via e-mail and reference the six-digit file number listed at the end of this letter. This will enable us to access your file quickly and handle your concerns in a timely manner.

Your response and/or call will help us to continue our tradition of providing the highest quality products and the best service possible. Hmmm, interesting. If I were using this product I would research corn syrup solids to get more information on it.

From a dietitian standpoint.

The worst ingredient, or the one that should cause you concern is not corn syrup solids but sucrose (aka - table sugar). This has been banned in all European formulas b/c of its taste perception changes in children. For example:

Breastmilk- Lactose - sweetness of 15

Corn syrup solids - sweetness 50

Sucrose - sweetness 100

Sucrose is found in almost all of Similac's brands, not to mention that they are the only formula on the market without the proper DHA level of .2% and above.

Just some nutrition info.
