If your baby is wetting enough diapers (5-6 per day) and pooping enough (depending on age), then you know the baby is getting enough. Also, if the baby seems satisfied when coming off the breast, that is another indication. The baby is the best "pump" so it should increase the more the baby nurses. If you are concerned, you can take a "nursing vacation" which means you take the baby with you to bed for two days and do nothing but nurse, nurse, nurse! Good luck!

Re: for BF Moms

milk is like supply and demand. as your baby needs more he/she stimulates milk production while nursing so that your body knows how much to produce. as long as you continue nursing and don't wean your body will respond and make more milk to meet the increased demand.

totally normal for one boob to make more

i would start pumping and freezing now. 1st thing in the morning is best right after your first feeding. thats when you have the most. be consistent with your pumping time every day in order for your body to respond the best. if you need to add another pumping session they say to do it after the last feeding before bedtime.

hope this is clear and helpful. feel free to fm any more qsChat Icon

*Your BM changes to meet your baby's needs as your baby gets older. It gets richer and richer as time goes by. The BM you produce when your baby is 2 months is different then when he is 5 months, etc... So your baby won't necessarily take more as time passes.

right now he eats 4 ozs and he will be two months old on the 19th and is it normal for one boob to give more milk than the other
*My DS is in daycare. While there he gets three 3.5 oz bottles. He is 7-1/2 months old. You would only need to increase the amounts of the bottles when he is STTN. When he goes through a growth spurt, he tends to just nurse more often when he is with me.

and i am going back to work in the middle to the end of jan when should i start pumping to have supply for the sitter?
*I would start pumping now. It's never too soon. That said-- I never built up a stash and it hasn't been a problem. I pump more than he needs and have been building up a stash since I went back to work.

Here is a link to an article from kellymom.com that I found very helpful when I returned to work. HTH.

Re: for BF Moms

I'd start pumping and freezing now. It's always good to get the supply going. I began pumping in the middle of the night to start my supply. It started when DS would wake up 2 times a night and only feed off of one boob. Then he'd fall back asleep. I would then pump the other boob. That's how my supply began. Now, other than pumping at work, he lays down at 10pm and I pump at 1am right before I go to bed. (We are late workers here)

My left breast almost always pumps more. He favors that side.
