For New Runners---training programs work (I'm an example)!
I only started running longer distances in June when I joined Team In Training to run the Hamptons Half Marathon. I always ran 3 miles or so for fitness but running much longer than that seemed impossible/boring.
Well three months of good proper training (following a training plan, listening to coaches, stopping alcohol a few weeks ago, etc.) helped me complete my FIRST half marathon in 2:00:06! I can't believe I did it that fast--I am still in shock. Another great thing is that I'm not super sore or anything!
I'd be happy to share training plans and any other advice with anyone looking to do a half.
Just know that it is very possible to turn into a long distance runner in a few months time!

Re: For New Runners---training programs work (I'm an example)!
Sure, I have a calendar that I used for June, July, Aug and September and would be more than happy to share those!
Basically I did speed or hill training on Tuesdays, a slow run on Thursdays, and a long run on Saturdays (though I started to taper 3 weeks before my run). I then walked or went spinning a on Sunday for "active" recovery and tried to do cross training/strength training on Mondays and Wednesdays.
I never ran more than 3 times a week though and only did a 6 miler the week before my race (per coach's instructions).
