Re: for the moms that
there are a million websites on how to train for a marathon- i found the best one to be a 16 week training program...google it, ull be able to find it...i was in training 4 years ago to do the marathon up in the adirondacks in september....the jist of this one was basically one looooong run a week, and i think 4/5 other days of running/sprints/training....the one long run started at like 4-5 miles i think- worked up to maybe 13 by like, the 8th or 9th week, then would decrease back down til the big day...!!!
good luck- i hear SUCH great things about the adironback marathon in september- foliage and all that- and i hear its a fairly flat route- great for a first time marathoner!!!

Re: for the moms that
I did a triathalon, not a marathon, though I've done half marathons and races, lots of 5 and 10Ks.
Have you ever done smaller races? I would start with that, and plan on the marathon not this year (it may be too late to get in anyway), but next year. You'll have more time to train.
There is tons of info out there, and I joined NY Road Runners at the time. I think they had local affiliates listed on LI if I remember correctly (I lived in the city then so I'm not sure). I never followed any really hard core guidelines though, I just watched what I ate and found it best when I ran no more than 4 days a week and cross-trained by swimming or cycling another 2 or 3 days for 6 days of cardio. I also lifted weights. When I just ran and did not do weights or cross training, I didn't make as much progress, and my joints stated to hurt. Running intervals also made a huge difference for me--they are hard, but worth it.
Look at New York road runner's website to start, I think it is nyrr.com. Good luck! Not sure I'll ever do this myself, too many knee problems in the last couple years.

Re: for the moms that
i ran a marathon a few years ago, and got my training program from a book called "marathoning for mortals". it's a really good book with lots of training tips, i highly suggest it!
