For the new walkers or BTDT mommies...

Bumps and bruises. How are your little ones doing. Daycare called 3 times in the last week with an "accident" and it's not just then, Bella hits the deck at least 2-3 times a morning and again at night with me serious enough to warrant some ice and drying of tears.

2 bloody lips, a couple of forehead bruises, a line down her face from falling over her toy gumball machine. She is soooo fast, I just think she is unable to keep up with herself, but then the daycare teacher suggested I get her checked out for falling excessively and now I am worried...

What do you think?

Bumps & bruises are common. How is her gait? Does she lean forward too much & try to catch up with her legs? How long has she been walking? We used to play a game with our kids. We would say "Slow, slow, slow." "Fast, fast, fast" when it was safer.

It could be that she is just a really goal oriented little girl trying to get where she wants to go before the rest of her can catch up. For peace of mind, talk to the pediatrician -- and then call your county to get her evaluated. If anything, they'll confirm how smart she is.Chat Icon

Thanks Barb, she has been consistently walking for a little less than 2 1/2 weeks. And by that I mean, just letting go and running around instead of going from couch to couch to stationary object like she had for the previous month before that.

She is fast, I mean almost running...and you can see she has a motive to where she wants to go, she plain doesn't look for any obstacles in her way, eye on the prize only I guess...

I have to get her flu shot in the next week or two, so I guess we'll get her checked then, just makes me nervous...

If it's only 2.5 weeks, I wouldn't worry about it. Still mention it to the ped, but seriously new walkers fall a lot.

I think she needs to learn about obstacles. Maybe start pointing out things she'll trip over. Make a game of it...

Walk, walk, walk. Uh oh. Stop. Move around. Walk, walk, walk.

I'm hoping this is translating right. Anything you can make a game out of it with some excitement will get & keep her attention.

My DD just started walking and the bumps and bruises are everywhere. I feel so bad. I find she walks so much better when she has something in her hand for some reason. Good luck. Chat Icon

Ryan tends to trip, if he starts walking too fast-

He gets wobbly here and there- but for the most part lands on his hieny-but trust me we have had our share of bumps and bruises lately...

My Dr told- that sometime when they are sick- their equliberium can be off- causing them to fall- and lose thier balance-

So if out of nowhere she is stumbling than thats one thing...

but other than than- I think its expected for a newly walking baby to fall...

Bumps and bruises here also! DD has been walking for about the same amount of time. She knows where she wants to get to and doesn't care if anything is in her way. The last day or so I notice she has been walking around things instead of falling over them. (like her brother) Chat Icon She's constantly on top of him. He has bumps and bruises from her!

My nephew almost cracked his head. He was walking and almost fell backwards, standing up though! Chat Icon

Thank God they caught him!
