For those of you doing IVF, are you concerned about....
The data that suggests children conceived through IVF have higher rates of birth defects and developmental problems. I am curious if anyone discussed this with their doctor and what the doctors said.
Thanks.

Re: For those of you doing IVF, are you concerned about....
I did have a discussion with my dr. about this and at the end of the day it didn't change my mind. IMO there are so many factors that can cause birth defects... it wasn't such an alarming percentage compared to non-medical assistance. It all depends on what stats you're looking at- and honestly I've learned not to rely on stats quite so much anymore. HTH.

I am going to do PGD testing when I get to that point. When I had my meeting with the RE responsible for genetics, the possiblity that there is a problem from IVF is negligible, especially compared to my odds of having genetic problems on my own.

Re: For those of you doing IVF, are you concerned about....
I am doing PGD as well, however I was surprised to see that it covers only a few disorders (I am doing the test for aneploidy). While I decided I still want it done, I am kind of disappointed that the technology doesn't exist to allow for more comprehensive genetic testing. My doctor basically told me that in my case PGD won't increase my odds of having a healthy child, it will just decrease my odds of having a miscarriage.

I was always under the impression that you should have less disorders from IVF.. I always thought that if that egg has issues it would either not implant or miscarry ? What data are you speaking of.. I have read nothing about this.. The chances I believed where lower?

I've actually never heard of this either. My 18 month old daughter is from an IVF cycle and she is seriously so advanced for her age it's almost scary. I wouldn't worry.

I did a lot of research on this before doing IVF. There is a very slight increase in birth defects with ICSI babies but it's truly not an alarming increase. There is no increase in birth defects with regular IVF at all.

Re: For those of you doing IVF, are you concerned about....
I have read some research on it, but it was also stated in the informed consent forms I had to sign. I think the doctor told me that natural birth has a 3% birth defect rate and IVF has 6%. That is why the IVF doctors recommend amnio. The researchers aren't really sure why this happens, but there are a few explanations: the non-darwinian nature of IVF, the higher rates of multiples, the manipulation of the egg, the prenatal exposure to progesterone and other drugs, etc. Honestly, it really freaks me out if I give it too much thought. But then I remember that I probably don't have much of a choice since I can't seem to get pregnant any other way!
Anyone else discuss this with their doctor?

I wouldn't hold much creditability to any %.... it will vary each time depending on where they're getting their stats from.
