For those of you who have been to Key West....
I have two questions.
1. Do you recommend flying into Miami or Fort Lauderdale and then driving to the Keys OR hopping on a small connecting plane. How long is the drive?
2. Is the beginning of May a good time to go? Should I be concerned about hurricanes?

Well it depends. On the way there we flew to Miami and got on another plane. Which was so easy...
But if you feel like renting a car and doing the drive its a nice drive.. should take like 2 1/2- 3 hrs.. we did the drive back to miami b/c we had no choice due to the hurricane
So it depends on you if you feel like doing the drive

We flew into Ft. Lauderdale and did the drive down...with a stop for lunch it took about 4 hours and the scenery was beautiful...
That said, it really is only a nice drive one way...the ride back was kind of torture so I would maybe suggest doing it one way driving and one way flying!

Ditto and ditto! Plus, we drove back when they were evacuating KW for a hurricane, so the traffic was unbelievable.

I've flown into Miami many times and driven down. I love the drive (either way). I did the Ft. Lauderdale route once and it's a little less enjoyable cuz you are on the highway for a longer period of time. I flew in once, but that is way $$$$$, and can't see spending money on that when there is so much to spend it on in Key West!!

WE went to Key West about 4 years ago. We flew into Miami and drove down. The ride was beautiful, but coming back..I agree was torture. We hit so much traffic and huge storms that it took us about 5 hours to get from Key West to Miami. We said if we go back we would rather fly into Key West.

Re: For those of you who have been to Key West....
We changed planes in Miami and flew into Key West last time we went because the kids were little and we didn't know if they would be ok with the drive... but when we go this year we are driving down from Miami.. we think the drive will be nice.. we're going to take our time and stop over at some places along the way.

Both times I went to Key West I flew in -- I can't really stand long car rides.

Re: For those of you who have been to Key West....
I have driven from FLL and MIA (MIA of course is closer, so better and you might hit traffic btwn FLL and MIA). Its great to see it once. You really understand where Crayola got the color idea for seafoam green.
If we go again, I think I will look into flying though.
I beleive that June is the start of hurricane season, so you should be OK. But it may be a bit hot and muggy in May.

Re: For those of you who have been to Key West....
I have done both too but I would definately spend the money on the flight. I think the drive is too long and there is only a one lane road most of the time so if you get stuck behind a slow driver you are with them for a good way. We go every year since 2001 and have driven twice and flown the rest. This year we will defiately fly. Another option is to take the ferry.http://www.seakeywestexpress.com/ thats an idea have never tried it yet! HAve fun you will love it here.. Go to Flamingos Crossing for GREAT ice cream..
