For those of you who have/had gestational diabetes..........
..........did you find that it was easier to manage once you started the insulin shots? I've been rigidly following the diet plan they gave me for the past week and my numbers have improved greatly BUT I am still getting some unusual spikes here and there. I'm going to the endocrinologist today to start the insulin shots in conjunction with the diet.
What was your experience with the insulin? Did you see a vast improvement in your numbers? Did you have to worry about your blood sugar dropping too low? Did it give you more flexibility in terms of what you can eat? Any info is appreciated!! TIA!!!

Re: For those of you who have/had gestational diabetes..........
I didn't have to take insulin but it did take me more than a week (probably about 3) to get my numbers under control. I went to an endocrinologist after maybe 2 weeks and when he looked at my numbers and meal plan, he gave me some more suggestions on changes to make (as did my nutritionist) and soon after I only had the occasional high number. I think it took a little while for my body to adjust as well as for me to learn what my body could handle and when. For example, even though everyone told me the little milk in my coffee in the morning should not contribute to my a BS of 140, it did. When I dropped it, I was always under 120. My Dr and nutritionist were strict. I always had to be under 120 after meals and under 90 fasting. I did it without insulin and DD was born at 7lbs 2 oz. Do you know for sure the endo will give you insulin? Do you know why they are jumping to it so quickly? Are your numbers really high? GL!!

They are very strict with the diet as well and they want the same #'s as you mentioned. Most of the time after I eat lunch and dinner my #'s go to 130-135 but then I get some weird # of like 160-170. I spike mostly after breakfast no matter what I eat. I know for sure I'm getting the insulin, I emailed them my #'s and food log yesterday and they called me to come in today and start on insulin. They said last week to everyone that they give you a week and if after a week of rigidly following the diet you're still getting spikes they say it's not dietary, it's hormonal. They went over everything I ate and they said I couldn't change much, I did what I was suppose to, I stayed within my carbs range, and I ate super healthy so they feel this is the best course of action. I asked for a few more days without the insulin but they said because at this point you only have a few weeks left in the pregnancy they don't like to wait, they want to get it under control right away so the baby is healthy so I can appreciate that but I'm nervous to take the insulin.

That stinks! But, of the people I know of who went on insulin, it helped pretty quickly. So even though it may be a pain, I am sure you will get used to it as fast as it took to adjust to taking your blood sugar and you will know that it is helping you and your baby! Also, I heard you don't have to be as strict with your eating because the insulin can be adjusted based on the sugar you are eating. So hopefully you will get to have some treats!

I'm not really happy about it but what can you do? It's in the best interest of my health and the baby's so I will do what I need to but it's a little frustrating to me that the diet alone didn't work. Like you said, on the plus side.........some treats would be nice. I'm dying without my ice cream!!!
Thanks for the replies!!

I am no help, I am able to control it by diet. I do get a spike here and there but it is ususally because I ate too much of something or the wrong thing.

Me 2. Also in regards to breakfast... that is when insulin resistance is the heighest and when your carb count should be lowest out of the three meals, so I usually stick with a ton of protein.

It's so hard for me to eat in the morning as it is. I'm not a breakfast person nor do I care for eggs but I've been choking them down. ICK!! I can't have milk or fruit with breakfast so it's killing me!! I keep telling myself it's just for 11 weeks.
I also just got back from the endo. and I was put on insulin shots 3X/day. Hopefully that will help. It's a little freaky giving yourself a needle but I can manage. Good thing I'm not needle phobic. Off to have my snack!!

Re: For those of you who have/had gestational diabetes..........
I had GD with my dd but didnt do insulin. i was able to control my #s with diet, i did have days that it would shoot up, and i would just try and think of what i may have ate that could have caused it. You may be eating or even drinking or not drinking enough water to cause those spikes.
I was told the most important # is the morning fasting #. If your under 90 then your okay. This is what my dietician told me. I found my morning #s were high if i didnt eat the right snack before bed. I found either a mini pita with peanut butter, or some popcorn usually did the trick and kept my # correct.

They said I'm eating very well so they are attributing it to the hormones because by all rights, based on what I've been eating, I shouldn't still be spiking. My morning numbers (before eating) are anywhere from 104-115 so I'm already starting off too high. I will be taking insulin at bedtime so that should help with the morning and breakfast numbers and then I will also take it prior to lunch and dinner. They said the insulin is common, about 3 out 4 women diagnosed with GD end up needing it so I guess that made me feel a little better.

That definitely makes sense. The insulin resistance is sometimes too strong right off the bat and no changes in diet will help. I hope you start to feel better and you are totally right plenty of women have to go on insulin- its safe because it doesn't cross the placenta unlike our blood sugar. Best of luck!

Re: For those of you who have/had gestational diabetes..........
I started off with awesome numbers...I almost doubted that I even HAD GD...thought they were crazy (well hoped anyway).
My one hour glucose showed a # of about 200, so they skipped the 3 hour - I thought it was a mistake...
After following the diet religiously and having great numbers, all of a sudden my fasting morning #s were well over 100...my highest reading was 130, when, as you know, they should be under 95 at that time. My OB became concerned at perscribed me the pill Glyburide at the lowest dose (2.5 mg) at bedtime. It has really done the trick - my fasting numbers are in the 80s now for over two weeks. He said as the pregnancy progresses, the blood sugar levels can get a little wacky, despite the diet...
Are you sure you need insulin or can they possibly prescribe this? Just a thought. Maybe you can inquire about it.
Good luck...

Thanks for the reply!! My # after the 1 hr. test was 238!! My morning fasting numbers have been anywhere from 104-115. They said they don't like to waste time since there is only a few weeks left in the pregnancy and they want to ensure the baby's health so I didn't have a choice with the insulin. I was at the doctor today and I started it this evening with dinner. I will be taking it at night before bed and before lunch and dinner. It actually wasn't as bad as I though giving myself the injection. It's annoying more than anything. Thanks again though for the suggestion!!

Re: For those of you who have/had gestational diabetes..........
Wow - that # is high!! Did they have you skip the 3 hour as well?
Good luck with the insulin...I'm sure you'll be fine now.
And if it makes you feel any better, my due date is in 2 1/2 weeks. I have been having nonstress tests and growth sonos for the past 4 weeks and everything is looking good, so hang in there!! I'm sure it will be the same for you!

I know, I was shocked!!! I never had a blood sugar problem before. They had me skip the 3 hr. They said anything over 180 and they send you right to the endocrinologist. I'm sure the insulin along with the diet will do the trick and fortunately once the baby is born this all goes away. Thank goodness!! I am happy to hear that everything is great with your baby too!! That is wonderful news for you and it makes me feel better too!! I had a growth sono on Monday and they said everything looks fine and the baby is measuring correctly for 29 weeks. I was relieved!!

Re: For those of you who have/had gestational diabetes..........
Well, at first my dosages were wayyyy too high and my blood sugar would drop very very low quickly. Then they played around with the dosage. I still had to stick to the crazy diet very very closely, and do the shots three times a day, but that totally controlled my sugar levels. They were perfect after that. I was faxing my numbers to my OB every other day since I had so much trouble in the beginning. In the last month I went for a non-stress test three times a week, but I can't remember if that was for the GD, having a breech baby, or both.
Good luck! Only a few more weeks!

Re: For those of you who have/had gestational diabetes..........
It's going well, my #'s are getting better. I don't think the insulin is helping all that much since my #'s are about the same when I was doing the diet alone. I think the endo will be upping my dosage. I'm adjusting and getting use to all of this though which is the good news. It's annoying and I'd rather not have to worry about this at all BUT I am surviving. They baby is healthy and that is all that matters. However, I look forward to 11 weeks from now when I can have some ice cream again!!! I'm also happy because I've also lost 3.2 lbs. which is kind of nice. I know we're not suppose to be losing weight but it's hard not to when your carbs are restricted and you're not junking out on yummy food anymore. Thanks again everyone for the replies!!

Re: For those of you who have/had gestational diabetes..........
Your not even allowed Sugar Free Ice Cream???? If you are, Bryers makes a good one...I get the vanilla/chocolate/strawberry one. Its not bad for sugar free.
When I had GD last time I was loosing weight every week and my Dr said it was fine because I was on a controled healthy diet. By the time she was born I had lost about 10 pounds (but I had only gained about 20-25 when I found out I had GD)
I am curious to see when I go to the Dr on Wednesday for my growth sono if I lost any weight or not.

Re: For those of you who have/had gestational diabetes..........
According to my OB & dietician, NO sweets whatsoever, definitely no sugar-free sweets (ice cream, chocolate, etc.) They would've killed me...of course, you don't have to tell them
