For those of you who pay your bills by check - a Q
do you date it that day or the day the bill is actually due?
I date it the day I am writing them out. DH keeps telling me I should date it for when the bill is due - b/c he doesn't feel they should get their money 1 day sooner.

you are not supposed to Pre-date or post date checks. You should write the current date on it.

I always put the day I am writing it out-
if you put the due date- do they really not cash it until then?

Re: For those of you who pay your bills by check - a Q
I date the check for the day I write it, more to keep my checkbook straight than anything. I don't know if my credit card company or whoever is even looking at the date of the check, but with my luck, they would hold it, forget about it and charge me a late fee.

you are not supposed to Pre-date or post date checks. You should write the current date on it. can I ask why? if a bill is due on the 30th and you write it out on the 22nd (just an example), why can't you date it for the 30th?

because when you write a check you are supposed to have the money in the acct at that point. Its like floating money, you can not do that.
and if you mail the check....on the 22md that is due on the 30th, the company gets it, they can not cash a check with a wrong date. they will not hold a check until your due date.

i've heard that post-dating checks is illegal. they will deposit it right away anyway so it doesn't matter.

I believe by writing the check and sending it to the payee you are authorizing them to have the money. Post dating a check does not mean the check will not be deposited upon receipt.

Re: For those of you who pay your bills by check - a Q
it's pretty rare for the bank to actually pay attention to the date of the check. Most of the check processing is done systematically. Unless the check is stale dated, most likely the bank won't check.
So, if you post date the check the likelihood they could cash it sooner is very good.
eta: that's why i pay bills electronically. It goes exactly when it's supposed to.
Come on D...get into the 21st century..it will probably make Bill happy too.

They can absolutely cash it with the wrong date although checks are supposed to expire after 6 months (at least that used to be the time limit at my bank).

Re: For those of you who pay your bills by check - a Q
checks are process by computers...you are supposed to date it the day its sent just like when you mail a package, its postmarked the day it goes out.
i would look into online banking that why you want have to relay on the mail getting your payment there on time. Most banks have free online banking and have electronic relationship with your payee's and bay them instanly posting in there system the next day.
imo, checks are a thing of the past and i hope more people would stop using them espically in retail stores
