For those that get them often, is there a way to try to prevent sinus infections?
For the past 2 years, every cold I get turns into a sinus infection. I was glued to my bed all day yesterday! I felt like I has cotton stuffed in my head. Any tips on preventing sinus infections? Can a nose/thraot dr. do anything for me?

Blow your nose all the time and don't sniff. All sniffing does is ***** that stuff up your sinus.
Or if it's too late to stop the sniffing just start some sudafed early and drink lots of water to drain.

go see an ENT - if you are constantly getting them they may be bacterial and not viral so without antibiotics you might keep getting them. If not at least the ENT can give you meds to take to try to prevent them.

I second Lillykat - go to an ENT. In the meantime, you can try hot showers/steam inhalation and OTC meds to treat the symptoms.

I used to get them so bad (flu like symptoms with no warning) that I'd be out of work for four days at a time at least twice a year!! I was on and off antibiotics for 5 YEARS!!! It was reallly bad.
1. Cut back on dairy. I replaced regular milk with Soy Milk and it has definitely helped. Dairy makes you build up mucus.
2. Buy a neti pot. When I met DH I had to cancel our first date because of a severe sinus infection. He suggested a neti pot. They have been used in India for thousands of years to irrigate the sinuses. It's a little tea pot that you fill with water and put in a pinch of salt. You then tip you head to one side and pour in one nostral and it irrigates you sinus cavity and comes out the other. I know it sounds really gross but I got them bad enough I was willing to try anything. You can do a search on-line for one. Several sites sell them. It's also a natural way to help... being on medication after medication is NOT good for you.
3. Try to isolate what's causing it. I watched the pollen report on the news and isolated that it's mold that puts me over the edge.
4. Keep a calendar of what you eat and your symptoms every day. That way you can bring this to a doctor and they can evaluate it. I got sinus infections every year at the same time (within two weeks) and I was sick 4 out of 5 St. Patrick's Days. that's how they pinpointed it was seasonal. Some foods can make your sumptoms worse... dairy, red wine are the ones that bother me the most.
Hope all of this helps.

Ditto.
I used to work for a great ENT practice a million years ago, but he is still practicing and he is a very good ent if you need someone.

Youngerman Jay S MD 875 Old Country Road Suite 100, Plainview, NY 11803 (516) 931-5552
He is very to the point and very straightforward & will really let you know what is going on. A bunch of my friends also went to him and still go many years later.
Good luck

my husband suffers from this really bad - he went to an ENT and is going to have surgery this year - he is just waiting for things to calm down at work a bit first. probably in the fall he will have it done. i heard you feel like a new person after it.. we'll see.
