How did your family react?

Our dream is really to move to the NC / SC area where my MIL lives....but I am terrified of telling my own family this. My mom barely accepts that I live in NJ, never mind down south...!

Was it a huge deal? Any arguments? Chat Icon

Honestly... I really think you are a little too concerned with what your parents thing in this situation.

Frankly... its your life and you should do what makes you happy. Especially since it already seems like they don't care for where you live now. What makes it any different?

Re: For those that moved down south, west..etc...

We just found out this week that we are def moving. People we have told are happy for us but sad to see us go. No one has really given us a hard time. I think people thought we where just talking so they where a little shocked that we are now def going. At the end of the day you have to do what is right for you and your DH. Its probably a little easier for us b/c my MIL will be moving to the same area as us & my Mom lives in Ireland.

They were sad to see us go but knew it was the right thing to do for us and understood. They were very supportive of our decision.

Jen, you guys have to do what's best for your family.

You can always visit whenever you can.

I told my mom and she is still trying to convince us to move to Orlando instead of SC so we will see what happens, but ultimately it will be our decision.Chat Icon

I understand your predicament. We moved less than two hours away, but my mom is still not thrilled even though she understands. Unfortunately she can't really drive anymore, so that makes it much worse.

DH is from Wisconsin and wants to return (I like it there as well) but I can't imagine breaking the news to my mom. It's hard to do what's right for yourself when you know it will hurt someone you love. Good luck, sorry I don't have any advice, just empathy! Chat Icon

I think we will eventually move south somewhere which absolutely breaks my heart because I love Long Island. But the cost of living is just rediculous no matter how much money you make.

I was talking to my mom and she kind of hinted that she didn't think she and my father could stay here more than 5 more years (after retirement ) just considering the energy bills, not even considering the taxes. So I think they will be moving as well.

DH's parents are looking to move to Maine.
