For those that run on the treadmill/outside
I am planning on running a 5K in May and I had some questions: I have been running on the treadmill and can do 3.6 miles in 45 minutes. How different is it to run on the pavement as opposed to the treadmill? When it gets a tiny bit warmer I am going to start running outside but for now, I have been using the treadmill. When I start running outside, what is the best sneaker to get? Right now I wear Nike but they are not running sneakers. Also, what are some good stretches to do before and after running? After running my knees feel sore. Thanks!

You've pretty much described my EXACT situation here (except you're faster. ) But I have the EXACT same questions, especially because one of my knees, especially, is INCREDIBLY sore after I run... but I'm also doing the treadmill thing for a 5K in May and have the same questions if anyone has any answers?

Re: For those that run on the treadmill/outside
Chances are, your knees are sore from using the wrong sneakers and possibly from doing too much too soon. i don't know when you started running.
I personally don't stretch but if I do, I do some gentle stretching AFTER. I usually put a leg on a stair or on my bed and stretch my hamstrings. i'll also do calf raises. You may want to do some pointing and flexing of your toes to stretch your plantar faciatis (sp).
As for switching to the outside...it will be different. There are more variations in a road that on a treadmill. You have to be more alert for changes in your environment.

Re: For those that run on the treadmill/outside
I've been running for years and did most of my running outside. I definitely find outside to be more exciting, but now, as a mom of 2 under 2, getting out is not easy, so we bought a treadmill so I'm accessible and can get a run in anytime of the day/night. I still try to sneak a few runs outside and after doing my first outdoor run in weeks (have been on the treadmill), I felt great outside.
I suggest maybe doing a small incline here and there - just be careful if you're not used to it, maybe try a 0.5 or 1.0 incline to simulate the resistance of running outside. Even if you do intervals of a few minutes on the incline and others off. A friend of mine who is an extremely fast runner does almost all her runs on the tm and said that it actually has made her faster.
Good luck - once you can handle the cold and get outdoors, maybe try to do at least one run per week outside. You will definitely be fine for the 5k!!

Re: For those that run on the treadmill/outside
From a running website: The primary differences are the lack of wind resistance on the treadmill, the flat, unchanging surface of the treadmill deck and the effect the moving belt has on your running or walking stride. The most common form problem associated with treadmill running is the tendency of the moving belt to “grab” your feet and pull them back under your body. This can result in a stumbling, shuffling stride that places excessive stress on your knees, hips and back. To avoid this, concentrate on quickly lifting your feet off the belt.

pavement is harder, plus there is wind and uphills. But there are also downhills, fresh air, wave from neighbors and fellow runners
the one thing about TMs are that they keep a pace for you. When you go outside you will be forced to set your own pace. when you get to the midpoint of your run, you have to consciously remotivate yourself to pick the pace up (since the 3rd quarter of any run is usually the slowest).
When I start running outside, what is the best sneaker to get? Right now I wear Nike but they are not running sneakers.
ACH! you need a running shoe! your feet take some punishment running. think more than double your body weight pounding on them. You want to make sure they can handle that. There isn't a perfect shoe. If you like the fit of your NIKE, you could try the Nike pegasus. It's a good, inexpensive shoe.
Also, what are some good stretches to do before and after running? After running my knees feel sore. Thanks!
ITA that your shoes are probably the reason your knee is sore. I'm not a before stretcher either. There are equal studies that are pro and con for stretching. (and research that shows a slow easy first mile is an acceptable warm up) after a run (3x 15-20 sec stretches), I'll bend at the waist with my legs crossed - and switch legs. I'll sit, legs spread. bend at waist - left, center, right. I'll put both feet together and press the knees to the ground. put one foot next to the outside of the opposite knee and take the opposite elbow to the bent knee and stretch your back.

I would also recommend you go to a running store and have them look at your feet and arches and recommend something. When you go, bring your current running shoe so they can see how it has been wearing out. I LOVE Runner's Edge in Farmingdale; the staff are all experienced runners.

Re: For those that run on the treadmill/outside
If you want to get a better idea of running outside, set the treadmill to a 1 incline. Its more realistic. Running outside is never flat ground.
