For those who had their hardwood floors redone
What finish did you get? I understand you can get glossy or matte?? Also what color did you chose?
Thanks. I need mine to be redone.

I got matte and I love it. I heard the glossy is more slippery and shows the scuffs. Ours is light - natural I guess.

Re: For those who had their hardwood floors redone
We thought ours could not be salvaged - but they actually came out great.
We sanded, then stained with "Gunstock" - its a reddish brown. Then we finished with a satin poly... it was in the middle of glossy and matte. It looks more matte to me - which is fine. IMO too much shine would make our hallway look like a bowling alley.

mine is glossy. you can't see scratches at all and it's been about a year. i love how they look.
they're not "shiny". just glossy finish.

That's what we have and is was so nice, but after almost 7 years, it's not as shiny, but they still look awesome.
I will say that they do show scratches easier. We did not do any stains, just sanding and then the poly.

This is what we did - had one room stained and kept the rest of the rooms natural and then finished with a satin. I agree that it looks more matte - but I like it. I was talked out of the matte by the finisher and am pleased with the results.
I am not a fan of a hi-gloss/gloss finish - imo you see more of the finish than the grain and being an appreciator of wood, that doesn't work for me. Plus there's that bowling alley factor

It's not the amount of coats that determine the glossiness - we had 3coats of poly but the poly was a satin finish, not gloss/hi-gloss finish - it's the finish you use.
My understanding is that satin poly is essentially gloss poly but that it has some agent in it that flattens (or mattes) the finish.

I had my floors done July 2006 so I'm not sure if pricing has changed but this is what we were charged: $2.50/square foot - Stain is $1 extra (so $3.50/sq ft) $25./stair - Stain is $5-10 extra (I can't remember the exact number - so $30-35/stair)
I used James Aliperti & Son - they're in Huntington.
