For those who put cereal in their baby's bottles

What kind of nipple did you use? I was told to put cereal in with DD's bottles (to help her reflux) and I keep clogging up her nipples.

I have born free and Dr. Browns bottles.

Thanks,
Karen

PS - And did you notice an improvement in your baby's reflux and/or spit-up by adding the cereal?

My nephew is using Level 2 nippples in the Dr. Brown bottles for his daughter. She is 7 months and drinking formula mixed with rice cereal. HTH!

They have y shaped nipples for thicker liquids. No, I didn't see an improvement in spitting up with the cereal.

We had to swap nipples and get ones designed for thicker feeds- these nipples either have a x-cut or a y-cut instead of a regular hole. We use Playtex Drop-Ins and they have a "variable" rate nipple designed for thick feeds. Originally we tried moving DS up a stage, but instead the rice cereal came out way too fast for him. Once we found the variable rate nipple, all became well. It took DS about a week to figure out how to suck on the new nipple. At first, it took him an hour each feeding to figure out how to get the milk to flow, but once he got the hang of it he's been finishing his bottles within 15-20 minutes.

The rice cereal made a difference for us. He seems like a whole other baby- always smiling and happy! He's doing well enough on it that he didn't need Zantac. He still spits up, but it's decreased immensely!

This might help you based on your bottles:

For the Dr. Brown's I bought the Y-shaped nipples and they work great with cereal.

Re: For those who put cereal in their baby's bottles

We went up to a size 2 nipple in the Dr.Browns and still sometimes had problems but we were also using powder formula that was/is very grainy.

I used the formula mixer (sold at both BRU & BBB) and that helped.
I also used to make a large batch in the blender Chat Icon and put it in the Dr.Browns formula pitcher and stir before pouring.

If you are using RTF not powder I recommend either the mixer if you are not warming bottles or the formula pitcher if you are so you can make a large batch and warm it from the fridge.

Also using room temp water helps.

And YES it did help her.
I read a lot of conflicting information... "not recommended for babies under 6 months as it can lead to childhood obesity", "doctors say there is not evidence that it helps at all" etc.
Cereal & the Zantac really helped with the AR & spit up. Which BTW peaked @ about 3 months.

ETA: The Y cut nipples were to fast for dd but since thats the least expensive and some have had luck w/it I'd try that 1st.

I use Born Free bottles. I actually stuck with the same nipple - I used Beechnut cereal and added only enough so that it would still come out of the nipple. Perhaps you can just go one stage up from what you are on currently.

I didn't use the Y shaped only because my son was 4 months and I was too worried about the rate of the flow. But that's just my paranoia. Chat Icon

I thought there was improvement w/the first few bottles, but then we were back to spit up. I used the born free variable flow nipples.

Re: For those who put cereal in their baby's bottles

I was doing this for DD at night for a while in an effort to get her to sleep through (it didn't work so I stopped)

I was using the Dr. Brown's Level 3 nipples and they seemed to work well...and I would pour the formula in, then the cereal and shake....
