For those with red rooms...

We have a red den/dining room and we're getting ready to begin working on the adjacent living room. What colors would you recommend?

The kitchen is a beige/light tan color, so we don't want to go with that again. I think that a gold color would look nice, but my dh doesn't want to do that (the room's yellow & he wants a complete change). I don't know what else will complement the red, so I'm out of ideas! Please help! TIA! Chat Icon

ETA: If you have pics to share of your adjoining rooms, I would greatly appreciate it!

We're going to go get some samples tomorrow. After looking online my dh thinks he likes blue/teal tones, but I'm not sure that I'm crazy about it. I think teal might be too strong of a color for the 1st room that people walk into...I'll let you know if we come up with anything good Chat Icon

My dining room is dark red on top (and a white chair rail and wainscotting on the bottom) and my adjoining living room is a light brown color... I originally wanted a dark tan color and it came out a little more brown that we wanted, but we kept it.

Re: For those with red rooms...

No help here, we have a red dining room and we did our adjouning kitchen in white, because we couldn't pick a color that we thought would look good against the red.

Re: For those with red rooms...

We used a neutral tan color by ralph lauren and brought the red into the living room with burgundy pillows on the couch.

Re: For those with red rooms...

check out this link its BM site where you can paint the one wall the red closests to the color you have now and then play with other colors behind on the other wall you can see, to get the best idea of how it will look (select bathrooms and kitchens, then kitchen 1 for the best view of walls next to each other)

Re: For those with red rooms...

Thanks so much everyone for your ideas! I went to Home Depot & Lowes this past weekend & brought home a ton of color cards to show him. We finally agreed on "Gallery Taupe." He's not crazy about gold or brown colors, so he liked this because it a lighter taupe and it's neutral color. We're still spackling & sanding, so I'll post pix when we're done painting...eventually... Chat Icon
