Formula question & Issue....alittle long...*Update*

Ok so my daughter is 5 months old and on her 5th formula...she has been on Nutramigen for awhile now and she is like a totally different baby (no screaming for hours, no really bad gas, no trouble going to the bathroom) anyway..the formula is alittle pricey...its costing us almost $100 a week...now I know that doesnt sound like alot to some but with the prices of everything going up things are getting really tight. I know this is the formula that I want her on so I will be paying for it for her....but here is one other issue...my ped told me to put her back on gentle ease since we are not able to afford the nutramigen anymore...so we started her back on the gentle ease on saturday (againest what I wanted to do) However it is now weds and she is back to the crying, fussy hard to go poop baby again and it breaks my heart to see her like this.

WHAT can I do....everyone keeps telling me to have my insurance pay for it but my ped told me she tried that already and they denied it (I think because she told them the baby was colicy).. I looked up Apria but at this point I dont even understand where to start with that or if I even can.
I think tomorrow I am going to put her back on the nutramigen again and get my happy little baby back..

Sorry vent over.
Do you think there is anything we can do?? Should I go see the dr and see if there are any other options or should I just suck it up and pay for the formula..

THANKS (p.s. I hope this makes sense)

**Update**
So I called my ped this morning and discussed the situation and they told me since she has no real reason (umm hello did you hear all her problems) to be on nutramigen they are not going to try going through the insurance (since they did before and was denied) I am so upset right now....My main concern is NOT just trying to get this formula for free but to help my little baby feel her best. I am so over my ped office right now Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'd call Apria. They have worked for a quite a few girls on here. Call and see what happens with them. It seems like a simple solution to your issues.

Re: Formula question & Issue....alittle long

I can completely understand where you're coming from. My daughter was on Neocate for the first year of her life and that was not covered by our insurance. We were spending over $600 a month on formula at one point. I would definitely try Apria. Just call them and tell them what you told us, and see what they can do. Unfortunately, they couldn't help us, but we're definitely the exception to the situation.
As for paying for it, it's just life. If you have to put it on a credit card (which sometimes we did) for a year, what are you going to do? It's money on a credit card to make sure your child is happy. To us, a happy, healthy baby was far more important that some credit card debt. Good luck, I know how hard and frustrating it isChat Icon

Is it possible to get some free samples from your doctor?

My ped just recently changed one of my daughters formula and sent us home with a crap load of free samples.

I would definitely call and ask. Good Luck!! Chat Icon

Re: Formula question & Issue....alittle long

OK, I've been thinking about this more, and I'm really upset that your ped, knowing that your daughter cannot tolerate Gentlease, told you to put her back on it because you cannot afford the Nutramigen. That's really upsetting. When my ped. knew we couldn't afford the Neocate, he did everything he could to get us free samples. They're not that easy to come by, but he did all he could to help out. So did all the moms on here. When times were desperate, we'd also buy them on Ebay.

I agree with Rachel. My DS was only on Gentlease, but my ped also gave me numerous samples.

You use Nutramigen? My friend is a NICU nurse in Philly, she hooked me up too, maybe I can get some from her tooChat Icon

Re: Formula question & Issue....alittle long

My ped told us that the law in NY state is that insurance must cover formula if it's the only one the baby can take. I never looked it up to find the exact wording of the law but she advised us to keep up the fight. We use Elecare and we go through Apria. I have had some headaches with Apria but they always shipped us the formula and it all worked out.

Cut back wherever else you can instead of using Gentlease. I think your doctor wanted to see if your baby outgrew the worst of the issues but it's clear that Gentlease is no good for your situation.

Just some clarification on the law in NYS about formula, it does not apply to any company that has private insurance, which was our case.
