Foster Children
Does anyone know how much they pay you to bring a foster child into your home?

Re: Foster Children
lol oh okay!!
I know that it varies depending on the child's needs and age. (whether it's a special needs child or an infant (where you'd have to be given money for formula, diapers, wipes, etc.) and a child who is in school and normal).

Re: Foster Children
it all depends. My mother had a few while I was growing up . Two girls over different periods of times.
It depends on what needs they have. One girl needed to have counseling 3x's a week so she was given a td bit extra for driving her back and forth so much. Um...They give you an amount for school books and clothes , which they usually ask for receipts for...
depends on the age and situation of the child.
Younger and older children or children with drug issues etc are the higher rates b/c of their needs.
I believe it was like $900 a month at one point for one.

Re: Foster Children
Definitley more for infants or special needs children. Overall I think it can range from $500-$1500 a month but Im not really sure of current rates.

I know. There is a woman on another board who has a 15 yr. old boy, 11 yr. old boy and she and her dh (her 52-him 65) just took in a 12 yr. old girl.
She is EXTREMELY frugal (does not even have internet at home and she is a professor at a college!) and unfortunately, I think she is doing this as she saves every dollar she can.
So sad if that is actually true, more for the foster child than anybody else.

That's so true. I did therapy and evaluations with foster children, including visits to the foster homes, and you'd be amazed at how many foster parents do it for the money and not for the love of the children. There are also some really amazing foster parents out there though. I met some wonderful, selfless people.
As the other posters said, the rates really vary based on the child's needs. There's a regular rate, a special rate, an exceptional rate, I believe, depending on the child's needs.

While I don't personally know this woman, I do know how she is with money and it seems like she is only doing it for the money. So sad.

Re: Foster Children
It's pretty sad. In my line of work, I've run into situations where the foster mother can barely take care of her own mental/physical health needs, yet, she takes in infants and young children. I hate to say it, but I KNOW it's gotta be for the $$$$.
I give props to social workers who can work with this population. I know I certainly couldn't do it.
