Fostering a dog from a shelter
Hey all, I'm not sure if anyone has any information or experience but i would love some help. After looking at all the sad faces on petfinder, i really want to consider fostering a dog, especially an adult dog who has been brought in. Any idea on how to start the process? I keep saying i would love to adopt a dog but i cannot choose. I want to take them all! If i could make life a little better for a dog til he or she gets adopted or for the rest of their lives (no matter how long it may be) I would love it and so would dh. Once again any suggestions would be welcomed.

I flunked fostering 101. LOL.
But, fostering is a great way to help. There is straight fostering, which often entails bringing the dog to various places to meet potential owners, etc. And then there is foster-to-adopt (what I did) which leads to hopefully you keeping the dog (if all works out).
You can try specific breed-rescues (like I did).

That would totally be me.. I'd love to foster, but I'd end up keeping them all... if a family came to look at the dog I'd probably talk them out of it just so I could keep the dog longer.. I don't know how fosters do it, I give them a lot of credit!
OP, it's a great thing you want to do.. good luck!

look on petfinder and you'll see all of the rescue groups. a lot of them (if not all) are looking for fosters! i personally know of waggytail rescues cause i almost fostered for them before i got my dachshund. that'll be your best bet! this is a wonderful thing you're doing! can't wait to hear about the new fosters you get in

Look at petfinder, craigslist or this is a great great website http://fosterdogsnyc.blogspot.com
I would do a lot of research on the group that you're planning to foster from. I would ask them questions like what happens if a dog get sick, do they pay for the medical bills. How involved are you with the adoption process, do you have to bring your foster dog to adoption events. What happens if you cannot foster the dog any more?
We are foster two dogs, one pit bull and a poodle.
Just remember that not all these dogs are perfect and they might have some behavioral issues. Sometimes love is not enough and you might have to train the dog.
Our foster poodle has issues with strangers and is territorial. Hes very cute and is sweet but he needs a lot of training.
If you have questions please feel free to FM me. good luck!
