Freaking out a little about breastfeeding.
My sister had a baby in January and couldn't BF (she didn't produce enough milk) so she gave me her brand new Medela Pump In Style, which has been sitting in my closet for months. I just took it out to check it out and totally freaked! I have no idea how I am supposed to pump at work (I am a HS teacher) and it looks like you need more than 2 hands to pump! What if the bottles start to overflow or something? Anyone else having BF worries?

You'll figure it all out! And what you can't figure out you can ask other moms who've done it already. (Like me!)
You'll probably only need to pump once during the school day. Do you have a closed office?

Re: Freaking out a little about breastfeeding.
I was terrified of breastfeeding and I ended up doing it for 2 years. I won't lie, the first few weeks were tough, but once we got the hang of it it became so easy & convenient. I didn't work full-time so I didn't have to pump very much at work. While it is a PITA, you will get used to pumping & you'll figure out how to squeeze it into your day.

A teacher at my school used to pump in the science prep storage room. You will find a place that is convienent when the time comes.

I think I am more fearful of BFing and all that goes with it than I am of parenting But I am sure, as many before us did, we will figure it all out.

Re: Freaking out a little about breastfeeding.
I'm not afraid of BFing, but I am afriad of not being able to pump.
My Mom and 3 of my sisters tried to pump and none were able too, and these are determined women who don't give up easily. I'm really hoping I'll be able to pump.

Re: Freaking out a little about breastfeeding.
We went to a BF class night and it seems to me that once you get the hang of it it's not that bad. Everyone I know who has done it said to hang in there because the first 3 weeks or so are hard but then you get the hang of it and it's very natural. I really, really would like to be successful at it so I will do my best to hang in there. Hopefully it becomes a little more intuitive than it looks on paper.

Re: Freaking out a little about breastfeeding.
I thought about this too...Im not even sure if I can pump at work, b/c I don't get any breaks during the day (it stinks) I will try to pump as much as I can so I have a supply at home and if not, supplement with formula. Guess I'll figure it out...maybe I'll have a break during my day

Re: Freaking out a little about breastfeeding.
Don't worry. I pumped at work for almost a year -- but I did have a private office with a door I could close which made it super-convenient.
You can get "hands-free pumping kits" which allow you to pump on both sides hands-free.

Re: Freaking out a little about breastfeeding.
Ughh great post. I am freaking out about BFing also. I don't have a office at work I am in an open area. I would have to tell my boss where I am going, and I do not want anyone getting "thoughts" in their heads! I hope I supply enough, but we shall see.

Re: Freaking out a little about breastfeeding.
It is really hard. Definately go to a class or have a lactation consultant come to help

I totally was too and had a real hard time after delivering DS. In a way, it was good i had a c-section b/c i was in the hospital longer and had more time to get help from the LS. My advice is in the hospital have the LS help you every time you try and feed the baby. Ask if the latch is correct, if the holding position is correct - they are there to help and really will help alot b/c the hospitals are really pushing BFing. I was almost crying out of frustration the first few days, but DS is 6 months old and i am still doing ( might be stopping soon though - a little bit of a pain with work!)

I use this at work and it works great (and I now use it at home so I can be on here when I pump!)
I got it at Buy Buy Baby.
Good luck and if it's really important to you to nurse - just try to hang in there for the first 6-8wks. The beginning is rough but then it gets really easy!

Re: Freaking out a little about breastfeeding.
i breastfed with my daughter an while difficult at first it was totally worth it..
a lady at my job pumped for a year.. she would go to the nurses office on her prep..no one in administration bothered her about it. she ha her baby during the summer so she started training her breasts to pump during the hour she had her prep...
no matter what the outcome, just remember that nothing beats a failure but a try!!

Re: Freaking out a little about breastfeeding.
I know - I was like when I realized I needed one - but when I started using it and didn't have to sit there holding up two stupid bottles I was more like like the lady - it really helps!

That's why she's smiling - no screaming infant - she's at work
