Free Feed Cat... how much do you give him?

I switched my cat from wet food to dry kibble (Chat Icon it was like he lost his best friend)

But now he seems to be going through about a cup and 1/2 a day. Is that alot for a cat? Everytime he passes his little food station - he pulls in for a snack.

I want to know what's normal for a free feeder.

thanks guys

Re: Free Feed Cat... how much do you give him?

we just went to our vet, for our kitties one year check up. our vet told us that dry food isn't that good for cats and studies show that cats are healthier on a wet food only diet.

so we switched her to a can of fancy feast in the morning and a can at night, we leave her a small scoop of dry food in a seperate bowl while we are out so she has a little snack.

maybe you should ask your vet what's appropriate for your cat?

hth!

Dry food is really good for their teeth. I usually give them dry food (about 1/2- 1 cup a day). I give them wet food for a treat.

Funny how vets can differ. Chilly is on only dry food for 5.5 years. She was having a lot of problems when she was a kitten and the vet said cats don't need wet as long as they are drinking enough water per day. I would give her a half a small can and she would vomit, still does if I try to give her wet food. I guess it is what works for your own cat that you have to follow. Best of luck!

Re: Free Feed Cat... how much do you give him?

Odd my Vet recommended a mix diet.

we give them about a 1/2 cup or less of dry in the morning.

We mix wet with dry at night

My cats are all on a diet. The little ones cause they just started out on less. Big guy cause he's a diabetic.

I heard wet is good for digestion and prevents too many cough ups. Dry is good for teeth. *shrug*

Re: Free Feed Cat... how much do you give him?

My vet said that dry food doesn't really help with their teeth unless you use the tartar control kind of food. Otherwise most dry foods don't break up properly, to help with their teeth.

It is funny that all vets say different things. I saw my vet a week ago and he said it was a very new long term study and he's been recommending less dry food to all his cat patients.

The study showed that cats don't have the digestive system to break down carbohydrates, so they overeat and develop diabetes and intestinal disorders.

It's been working for our cat so far, she didn't really like dry food and has had a really healthy weight so far. She's only a year old, so we'll see how it goes.

My cat used to be on free feed dry food and she got very sick with urinary tract problems. She also gained a tremendous amount of weight and lost her spunk. We switched her to a wet food only diet and she is so much healthier.

Chat Icon

I'm actually a little more confused now.
I did notice he gained weight immediately after we stopped the wet food.

I may call the vet about it.

Thanks!

True, but you should be looking at the ingredients of the cat food. If corn or something non meat is 1st or second on the ingredient list, it isn't the best food for them. Protein should be the main ingredient and sadly a lot of cat foods don't have that.

Re: Free Feed Cat... how much do you give him?

My cats get dry food in the morning and a can of wet food plus more dry food in the evening.
Our vet said they should have mostly dry for their teeth.
The "supermarket" brand foods are very fattening.
