I rarely have cash. Lately, I've been trying to keep some because DS is getting an allowance now, and he doesn't take CC... yet... 
If I have cash on me, it's too easy to spend. I'm much more frugal and conservative with the credit cards, so it saves me a lot of money by not carrying cash around.

I never have cash, I always use my debit card. I am always frigged when I have to pay somewhere for parking.
I think if they knew they were going to have to throw the food away anyway, and it was their error that the machine wasn't working, the right thing to do was to give you the food.

They definitely should have given you the food! They didn't tell you until you went to pay and they accept credit/debit there. The food would have went in the trash anyway and take out places waste SO MUCH food constantly..i think it was nice of her and you shouldn't feel guilty at all!!
This happened to me once at KFC. However they did NOT give me the food..I had waited on a drive thru line for 10 minutes to get my kid fries when he was crying...went to pay..machine didn't work and i had no cash. He told me "sorry, theres an ATM around the corner". Nice right?

DH "forces" me to carry some minimal cash for emergencies. Before I met him I was virtually cash free since I charge everything and still do now.
They did not have to give you the food but they did not put a sign either that their CC machine was not functioning on the Drive Thru machine.
Did they hand you the food? Because once you touch it they cannot take it back for other customers. So it is supposed to be trashed.

Secondly, what ever happened to those old-school credit card swipers? Where they make an imprint on the carbon copy? Can't they use that and write down my license number on it, too?
I never have cash on me, I always use my cc, I'm surprised they gave the food to you. But, they would probably have to throw it out anyway, so that's why you go it.
And this part, it is illegal for them to write down your license number on checks or credit card slips.

i NEVER have cash on me! 1. i don't like having cash on the subway (i know it's unlikely that someone would "sense" that i had it and robbed me just bc of that  but i still don't like it) and 2. if i have cash i feel like that's money i can spend, which i don't like...

I hate going to the ATM,so I rely on credit and debit for everything these days.
I feel like they should make cash obsolete already!

My car offers towing for free and will even bring me gas if i run out!

I never carry cash. But I wouldn't have felt guilty! They should have made sure their debit machine was working or an ATM. I went to McDonald's once and the same thing happened to me, so I said oh I'll use the ATM in front. That wasn't working either. They weren't about to give me anything free- they told me sorry and I stormed out!

During the blackout credit cards were worthless
Also need cash because a lot of places in NYC have $10 minimums for atm/credit cards

This is another reason I always have cash. During the blackout, you couldn't get cash anywhere. It's unlikely to happen again, but you never know.
Plus, the card can become damaged and machines are down in stores often enough to warrant carrying some cash.

I never carry cash. I rely so much on my debit card. DH on the other hand always had cash on him and never uses his debit card.
I wouldn't have taken the food. And if I had taken the food, I would've went straight to the ATM for cash and went back to pay.
