I almost never have cash on me so I would have been stuck too.
I probably would have taken the food and considered it a "pay it forward" moment.
Find some way to buy someone else lunch/coffee or get some cash in the near future to give the guy that's always standing on a certain corner $5.

This is a great idea!
I always carry cash - not much, but some, just in case. I'd probably feel a little guilty too, but you really weren't stealing - the employee made a choice to give you that food.

I wouldnt feel bad, they took your order and if they were having a problem w/the cc machine they should have told you before you ordered. Its not your fault. I also never carry cash on me.

I usually have some cash on me, for small purchases, but occasionally I run out before getting to an ATM. If I had been in your situation, I would have graciously taken the food, and considered myself lucky. If you didn't take the food, it would have ended up in the garbage anyhow.

I NEVER carry cash on me and always rely on places having debit/credit machines, or like you said, at least have one of those old school machines.
If I ended up getting free food, I would probably swing by later that day with cash.

I work in the city, because of 9/11 and the blackout I now make sure I always have some cash on me.
Same here
my dh and i had $5 between us during the blackout and had dirty water dogs for dinner, no way to get home and were stuck relying on friends generosity to help us out. So since then i always have some sort of cash on me
i don't like to use my debit card for everything because it's just more transactions i have to keep track of and write down..
i keep cash to pay for lunch, pay for tips at bars or cab rides etc.
Cash will always get you anything you need.. so its never a bad thing to have some on you !

I always have cash--besides the blackout, there was a time about 10 or 11 years ago, when all ATMs in Manhattan were down. It was weird--but fortunately I had cash, & was able to help at my friend who was cashless & at the ATM when we realized this.
I also always forget that NYC cabs take cards now.
The store should have had a sign at at the drive through or mentioned it on the speaker, so it's not your fault. You were intending to pay for the food.
ETA- I also rarely use debit b/c I don't want to keep track of all the little the transactions & DH convinced me someone was going to steal my # & deplete my account. 
It is easier to deal with fraud with a CC.

I usually take out $500 at a time and once it runs out, I don't have cash for a week or so. So I either have a lot of cash or none. I like to use my credit card to rack up points.

I hardly ever have cash on me.
If it's a large chain or a large type of store then they should have a merchant machine.
I could understand some mom and pop places not having one... but even these days those types of stores have them. Heck all the stores in the town of woodstock have them now!!!
In this case I wouldn't feel to bad considering it was THEIR machine that was DOWN. Not that you weren't willing to pay.
BUT I do think it was nice of them to give you the food anyway... even if that is the right thing to do.. it's still nice.

No, more than 10 years ago. Maybe 98 or 99.
It was a Friday night. I am not sure what caused it--there wasn't anything major going on--maybe a storm, but no blackout or anything.

I rarely have cash on me that's more than $5...if anything.
If I have to stop and pick up something I try to ask first if I can use my debit card but like a PP mentioned, I wouldn't feel too bad about this instance--they didn't mention at the beginning of your transaction that the cc machines were down
