free met opera outdoor performances in nyc!!
thought I would share - started yesterday! ----------------------------------------------------- The Metropolitan Opera celebrates the 40th anniversary of its “Met in the Parks” concerts with eight free performances of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata and Rigoletto from August 22 to September 2. The Metropolitan Opera will travel to outdoor venues in each of New York City’s five boroughs as well as two parks in New Jersey, bringing world-class opera to thousands of area residents in a uniquely accessible and informal outdoor setting. All performances are completely free of charge, and no tickets are required.
Since “Met in the Parks” began in 1967, more than 7.5 million people have enjoyed the artistry of one of the world’s foremost opera companies while relaxing and picnicking under the stars. This summer’s concerts will be held later than usual to accommodate the Met Opera’s three-week tour of Japan in June. Along with the Metropolitan Opera’s regular Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts, the “Met in the Parks” series ranks with the company’s most successful efforts at bringing opera to a vast audience beyond its Lincoln Center home.
This summer’s “Met in the Parks” concert series kicks off on Tuesday, August 22, at 8 p.m. on the Great Lawn of Manhattan’s Central Park with La Traviata, Verdi’s heart-rending tale of a social outcast’s sacrifice for love. Soprano Hei-Kyung Hong sings the lead role of Violetta with tenor Wookyung Kim as Alfredo and baritone Charles Taylor as Giorgio Germont. Derrick Inouye conducts.
“Met in the Parks” returns to Central Park at 8 p.m. the following evening, Wednesday, August 23, with Rigoletto, a moving musical portrait of a hunchback court jester who loses his beloved daughter in an ironic twist of fate. The cast includes soprano Norah Amsellem as Gilda, mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera as Maddalena, tenor Roberto Aronica as the Duke of Mantua, baritone Mark Delavan as Rigoletto, and bass Raymond Aceto as Sparafucile. Joseph Colaneri conducts.
