Free Rabies Vaccines for Nassau
Rabies vaccines for dogs and other animals will be offered on Saturday at the Oyster Bay Animal Shelter.
Under state law, dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets must be immunized against rabies. The Nassau Department of Health said 67 rabid raccoons have been found since 2004, pointing to the importance of vaccinating pets.
The free vaccinations, open to all Nassau residents, will be administered between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Oyster Bay shelter, 150 Miller Place, Syosset.
Rabies is transmitted by the bite of a rabid animal. The virus may also be transmitted when the saliva of a rabid animal comes into contact with cut, open or scratched skin lesions.
