Freezing eggs - questions

Hi! I went through my IF without being on this board too much. Although doctors didn't think I'd get PG, after chemo, I did a few years ago. Now we are faced with the possibility that chemo might not be an option again and surgery will be the only way.

I wasn't sure if DH fully understood what is going on, but then he asked 'Can we freeze some eggs?'

What costs are we looking at? Can I freeze eggs or do they have to be embryos? Any info you can give me is appreciated. We have a lot to figure out.

TIA!

You can freeze just eggs, they don't have to be embryos. I don't recall the cost - it was a backup plan of mine - but I want to say maybe $1k / year (for storage)? Of course first you would have to go through the stim cycle with the meds and all and depending on your insurance, that can be pricy.

ITA.

You can google "oocyte cryopreservation" which is the more technical name for egg freezing and that might help you get some more info.

My clinic charges $1100 for freezing embryos (probably the same for eggs) and that's for the initial freezing fee anf first year - and I think it's around $600/year after that.

I would definitely research freezing eggs vs. embryos and see how the success rates are for each one.

I think you'll find a lot of valuable resources at www.fertilehope.org- they're a non-profit organization that raises awareness and provides education and support about fertility preservation options for people diagnosed with cancer. You can be potentially eligible for treatment discounts through their Sharing Hope program as well. They'll be able to tell you what centers offer egg freezing along with specifics on costs/effectiveness, etc. I'm a volunteer for them and I truly believe their mission. If you have any other questions let me know!

I don't know if you plan on using insurance or paying OOP but I know that my insurance originally declined my cryo b/c they thought it was either eggs or sperm- and then I called to fight it and they then approved it b/c it was embryos... but I know different insurance plans are different. This is what I was afraid of. I will not freeze embryos and DH is the same way. Call me the crazy Catholic girl, but I guess I should feel completely blessed to already have my miracle. We might be different if we didn't already cheat IF once. Thank you all for your responses. We are awaiting my brain MRI results. Chat Icon

God bless you and I hope you are okay. You can freeze eggs, though I think the chances of success aren't as good as if you were to freeze embryos.

Good luck.Chat Icon
