FRIDGE OPENING... Funny topic...
Growing up, were you allowed to open the fridge at someone else's house ?
Were others allowed to open the fridge at your house ?
I'll never forget when a close friend of my mom's daughter (a few yrs younger than me) opened the fridge at our house, I thought my mom was going to faint (the things they took SO SERIOUSLY )
so we were raised to NEVER EVER open the fridge at someone else's house. and for the most part, no one (except that one girl ) opened the fridge at our house. I guess it was an unspoken rule of etiquette.
NOW, Im TOTALLY different. If friends are over, and have baby bottles, etc. They know theyre completely welcome to open my fridge at any time.
But I have that instilled in me still, so I will ask or mention if Im opening someone else's fridge, whether Im putting something away, getting my son's bottle, etc.
What's your story on this ?
Might this actually be a topic that HASNT been discussed yet ?

I open friends and family's fridges, and friends and family are welcome to go into ours, and often do.
If I don't know them too well, I feel a bit uncomfortable going into their fridge.

Re: FRIDGE OPENING... Funny topic...
if i am good friends with them and have visited their home a lot--and know i can self-serve--then i'll use the fridge.
but if not--i won't go into the fridge.
i tend to not like ppl opening my fridge---only because my mom raised me to be a good hostess and i should never let anyone get anything in my home--i should be getting it for them.

Re: FRIDGE OPENING... Funny topic...
Oh God! To this day, my mom would KILL me if she heard I opened someone fridge!!!!!! HAHA Its such a HUGE thing with her!
I am different though in my house. Anyone can go in there if they want something. I am NOT a good hostess and I rather them get something for themselves if they want it to be honest. But I liked to be asked first. Someone who just comes in and just opens the door peeves me too I guess. Being asked is nice, and then I tell them its ok.
Even now, the only fridge I will ever open without asking is my moms and my best friends before she got married. Now at her home with her husband I never would unless she specifically told me to do so. I cant believe this was so big when I was growing up too..We always seem to come from the same world Anna!!

Re: FRIDGE OPENING... Funny topic...
I wouldn't open anyone's refrigerator without being expressly asked - actually I would open my mom's, but not my sister's.
I thought it was weird when my son had a playdate & the kid opened our fridge.

Ditto.
Also, if we're having people over for drinks, I tell people to help themselves. This way, DH or I don't have to constantly jump up and down.

Re: FRIDGE OPENING... Funny topic...
I opened my friends fridges and they did the same at my house. I don't go into random houses and open the fridge, that would be weird. The one fridge I never felt comfortable opening was at my dad's girlfriends house. She was a meanie. I used to go around the block to my friends house and make myself a sandwich.

Re: FRIDGE OPENING... Funny topic...
I ALWAYS ask before going into anyone's anything, except my family's. In fact, at open houses, I used to ask before even opening closets and REAs thought I was weird...haha...

Re: FRIDGE OPENING... Funny topic...
yeah, I come from a rather traditional family.... where virtually everything is hands-off at a friends house....
kids can only go into their friends bedroom or the family room / den / basement to play... no one elses bedroom, not the dining room, not the living room..... no roaming where you don't belong.
you also shouldn't be opening someone's refrigerator, closet door, cabinet door, medicine cabinet.........
refrigerators and kitchen cabinets were definitely off-limits in someone elses home. and our cabinets/frig was off-limits to my friends. I had to get stuff for them.

Re: FRIDGE OPENING... Funny topic...
HAHA so funny !
NEVER would I open someone else's fridge. That was just one of my mom's things.
And when I was little and someone opened my mom's fridge , I always cringed b/c I though...oooooooh my mom is not going to like that!
Also -- growing up, I never took any food, whether it was a drink or an apple w.o asking first. I still do it as an adult when I am over my parents

Re: FRIDGE OPENING... Funny topic...
I've never really thought about it. It wasn't something that I was specifically raised NOT to do. If I'm at my sister's house, I have no qualms about opening the fridge, but I'm always helping her in the kitchen. At a few close friends' houses, I will go into the fridge comfortably if I'm helping them clean up. Otherwise, I'll probably say something like, "Is it okay if I get some water from the fridge?" If it's not a home that I'm so comfy in, I wouldn't open the fridge unless I've started to help out with cleaning up and it was indicated that I should put something in the fridge.

I freely open people's fridges and they are free to open mine.
If it's someone I just met or barely know, then no.

this thread is funny
yes, Noreen, we do have SOO many similarities in our upbringing, thats why I love ya so much !
Im glad other moms have had the same reaction as mine. I swear it's something I will never forget, that friend opening our fridge... boy, if only THAT were the worse thing a kid would do today. and this friend was a sweet, dear, wonderful friend of my mom's, so no hard feelings at all, but my mom was like

Re: FRIDGE OPENING... Funny topic...
I have only really done it at FH's family's house and recently when we stayed at my frined's house for the weekend and were told we could self serve. I also have a few family members in whose homes I wouldn't hesitate to get a coke or something.
In my mom's house she would DIE. She's still iffy about FH doing it sometimes.
For me, I don't mind if it's close frineds or family..but I think like a drink or an apple is one thing, but if they started pulling meals out I would start to twitch.
Funny story: My boss was telling me yesterday about the time a tutor went in the fridge at a student's house and got food. I was like The funniest part was the the tutor saw NOTHING wrong with it..he said "well they are relly nice to me so I thought it would be ok."
I would go off the deep end if someone I hired for a job helped themself to the contents of my fridge!
