Front loading washing machine & detergent
We got the whirlpool duet washer and while reading the user guide it said to only use the detergents marked with HE. For those that have the whirlpool duets what detergents do you use and MUST they be HE? I only use Tide and I have half a container full so not sure if I should use it on the machine yet or not. TIA

We have the same on and only will use HE. Ever since a friend of ours(who has the same one as well) had a malfunction with theirs and the repair guys said something got clogged from not using the HE, and that only HE should be used.....ever since then I won't use anything else.

yes you have to use HE with front loaders, b/c since the washer uses less water, you need a detergant that makes less suds

Mine says to use HE detergent and I never have. And never had a problem. I seriously think its a marketing ploy. I use regular Tide detergent and just use 1/2 the amount.

While I use HE detergent now, I totally agree. I've used non-HE and just cut the amount in half.

Trish do you use half of what you would normally use in a regular washer or do you fill the detergent holder halfway in the front load washer?
DH says it is a ploy too but I don't want to risk damaging the machine.. What washer do you have?

We use regular detergent in our front-loading machine, but we only fill it to the 1st line in the cap. So far no problems. I had purchased a lot of detergent on sale when stores used to double $1 coupons and don't want to waste. I will probably switch to BJ's brand HE detergent when I run out of the others.

I only use HE.
I just googled HE detergent and based on what I was reading on different sites, HE isn't just about sudsing, but prevents dye transfer, cleans clothes differently (since there's less water) and won't void your warranty.
Washer manufacturers recommend that only 'HE' high efficiency detergents be used in their front load and high efficiency washers, and most will even recommend a particular brand of HE detergent.
There is a good reason for using detergent that is specially formulated for these newer front load washers. HE detergent is a concentrated laundry soap that is low-sudsing especially for use with low water high efficiency washers.
If regular detergents were to be used in front-loading and high efficiency washers, the presence of too much suds could 'confuse' washing cycles, cause delays and make proper rinsing of clothes difficult.
Similar to why dish detergent does not work well in a dishwasher which requires specially formulated no-sudsing dishwasher detergent, performance can be severely affected by the use of improper detergents in low water washing machines.

I decided to use the HE Tide. My luck the washer would break down the minute I tried anything else.  Thanks everyone.
