frozen pipe spinoff: Do you run water to prevent pipes from freezing
I remember my parents doing that as a kid. Is it a good ideal to still do that?

If your pipes are prone to freezing, it will slow it down or prevent it, but I would rather fix the problem than just run the water all day. You can insulate the pipes, get some heat to them, etc.

we are in a new construction home, so they are insullated.
So I guess there is no need to run the water.

No, I definitely wouldn't. For new construction, there should never be a need to worry about frozen pipes (assuming the house heat is working, of course)

Re: frozen pipe spinoff: Do you run water to prevent pipes from freezing
We had to do it the first 2 years in our house bc our pipes in the kitchen would constantly freeze & we could not figure out why...Finally my DH & dad investigated to find NO insulation on the wall...We have since solved that & have no problems now

Re: frozen pipe spinoff: Do you run water to prevent pipes from freezing
Our pipes froze on thursday night. First time in 3.5 years in the house. When the plumber came we found out that part of the wall the pipes are in isn't insulated. Unfortunately we can't rip open the wall just yet to insulate so the plumber suggested just leaving one faucet running just to a trickle. It must have worked, we woke up to running water.

I guess I should rephrase, then.... PROPER new construction shouldn't have frozen pipes....

That will only work on the water pipes. We had a heating pipe freeze once

oh no.
We have electric heating, so I don't have to worry about that.
I just have this fear of a water pipe freezing and bursting and DH not being home to help me

Re: frozen pipe spinoff: Do you run water to prevent pipes from freezing
I wonder if having a whole-house water softener helps.... it adds a tiny bit of salt to the water, which would lower the freezing point.
I did have heating pipes freeze a few years ago. It was under the small section of house that only has a crawl space, and isn't open to the rest of the basement. We now have forced hot air heat, so that won't be an issue any more.
