Full day kindergarten
Does anyone know if New York state has mandated full day kindergarten for all schools starting in 2010-2011 school year? I have heard some rumors and wouldl love if this was true.
East Meadow only has hald day kindergarten right now. I would love if my son could go to full day next year.

Re: Full day kindergarten
Kindergarten isn't mandatory. . .Let alone full day kindergarten. Especially with budget cuts, I wouldn't bet on it!

Re: Full day kindergarten
My understanding is that it mandatory that the programs be full day if they are not then the districts have been getting a fine. I know my district that I work in has been paying the fine for the last 2 years I believe because the fine was less than the salaries, materials and cost for new rooms to make that possible.
So yes while I believe it's mandatory, I am not sure every district will comply because of the cost.

Re: Full day kindergarten
I teach Kindergarten and my district is going to full day next year (we technically have a 3/4 day now). I don't think this is state-mandated, though, and I never heard anything about a fine.

I totally agree. I want my son in full day and I was even considering sending him to a private or Catholic school for the one year. I really hope they switch to full day next year.

My kids are in the Levittown school district. My dd is in Kindergarten and she goes 4 hours a day. I did hear that by 2010 school year it is supposed to be full day.

Re: Full day kindergarten
harborfields and Northport are still 1/2 day too...I haven't heard anything about the 2010 deadline...DS#1 would miss it, but at least DS#2 would get in.

Re: Full day kindergarten
I am in East Meadow. My son wemt to Twin Oaks for Kindergarten. My DD has 2 more years unitl kindergarten. I heard that East Meadow IS NOT going to go full day in 2010 - they are going to take the state fine . I will be so annoyed if that is the case. I dont want to spend another 900 a month for kindergarten
