From what I have seen..Crafts, puppet storytime, and balloon animal and face paint for older kids. We are having kids decorate cowboy hats for DDs party then Ill probably have balloon animals. Maybe a storytime/character thing.

fun activities for bday parties
Someone just recommended Professional Kids Entertainment to me. I've heard they are great!
If you're looking for activities I feel like a piñata is always fun. Do kids still play pin the tail on the donkey?? I always loved that!

Re: fun activities for bday parties
What age? We just had DD's 1st birthday in our backyard, and this is what we had there:
Water table Small ball pit (for one kid at a time, pretty much) Bubble Machine Bounce house (it was my nephews', so we didn't have to rent it) Craft activity Sidewalk chalk Inflatable Ring Toss (no one used)
The 1-2 year olds were thrilled with the water table and ball pit. The 3-6 year olds loved the bounce house and craft activity. They all loved the bubbles. We didn't have any hired entertainment.

which craft?
I ordered these big card stock sunglasses from Oriental Trading, and bought stickers, foam stickers and glitter glue for them to decorate them with. Very simple, and they enjoyed it.

Re: fun activities for bday parties
If it is a home party, I don't think you even need organized activities. Kids can play with your toys.
I personally don't like parties at restaurants/catering halls if there is no formal entertainment. Crayon type activities can only last for so long.
My favorites are home parties with entertainment. My kids and I like these best.
eta: bounce houses and water play seem to be a universal hit when we attend parties. art activities tend to be hit or miss. I have hosted playdates for my mom's club where I buy a lot of supplies for a theme and most of the kids prefer to play with our toys than do the art activity.

Re: fun activities for bday parties
We are doing some "minute to win it" games for DD's bday. She's going to be 5. There are a lot of ideas on Pinterest.
I also plan on doing, potato sack races, 3 legged race, and musical chairs
