Fundations??

Hi Teachers! My school adopted the Wilson Reading program and Fundations..We have had several meetings and were allowed to "play with the kit" last Spring...now we are supposed to implement it on the 17th and I am freaking out watching training videos. I sorta get it and can do the orientation but the scooping and how do I do spelling words is tricking me (like the trick words)??
Any thoughts or suggestions on this program? My school always abandons things and makes us learn new things.
HELP PLEASE!! Is it really that hard or am I stressing this new year? Thanks!! Chat Icon
GOOD LUCK BACK TO SCHOOL TEACHERS!!!!
BTW I teach First grade, if that helps..this will be my 5th year..I still get nervous LOL

My school started fundations last year. It looks a lot more complicated than it is..just very time consuming. Toward the end of the year they start asking u to do these crazy things with marking up the word.. I think it's just stupid..but that's me. I haven't actually taught the program..I was excessed last year and acted as an AIS teacher with the first grade so I got to see every first grade teacher do it every day..it's not hard.

Re: Fundations??

My school uses the program in K and as AIS for 1-2, Wilson 3-5. I like Fundations because the kids in our school have done very well with it. However, I HATE the way the manual is layed out. You are constantly looking all over the place for what to do next. I simply wrote a out what pieces I was doing when (nothing crazy, a sentence or two for each piece) and it helped me out ALOT!! You really do have to read the book before teaching and sometimes talk it out, at least I had to because I would confuse myself. Once you get used to teaching it it is easy. It seems very monotonous and boring but the kids like it and even the neediest students catch on pretty quick. Good luck!

Re: Fundations??

Thank you both sooo much! I started it last April and I had the manuel on my lap while teaching LOL I never really went past the begining and just aprehensive about the program but glad to hear such great feedback. My principal wants to observe one fundation lesson too. I feel so UNconfident with it and will be observed in it :(
Thanks for your responses and I guess by next year I will be a pro at Fundations. Have a great year!!

Re: Fundations??

We have Fundations at our elementary school. I used to teach the Wilson Program and certified in Level ! and currently going for Level 2.
Do you have a trainer?
It is very time consuming. You have to really watch the videos. It is a GREAT program.
If you have any questions please feel free to FM me.Chat Icon

Re: Fundations??

Fundations is an AMAZING program and you will be really surprised at how much your kids get from it. If your school is just starting in now, then you will be floored next year when you see how much the K kids know. It's a multi-sensory way of learning "phonics" but it also teaches children how to spell and read more difficult words.

Good Luck!

ps "trick" words are sight words (they are tricky bc you can't 'tap' them out)
