Furniture Placement /Rate My Space-UPDATED WITH PICS

Can someone please help me with this room? It's our "great room" and it's open. I feel that the furniture placement makes the room smaller but with the TV on the wall and the corner fireplace, my options are limited. Any suggesstions? Also, what would you change? I'm always looking to change things up.

Thank you!!!!

To many pics on the fireplace??

Re: Furniture Placement /Rate My Space

I would have put the tv above the fireplace and then moved the couches to align with the corner fireplace

But I don't think you want to do that so this is my other suggestion..

I would remove the loveseat all together and get a chair and put it next to the fireplace with that table as the side table

I would then get rid of the area rug for a smaller one (that one is too big and it's lost in the room) and then pull the area rug closer to the TV without blocking the fireplace and then pull the larger couch towards the tv and move the console table to behind the couch

and I'd get a window coverings for those windows..

I would also remove alot of the pics you have on the fireplace mantle and make the wall behind the couch your photo wall

Thank you!

We did have the TV on the fireplace and it strained our necks plus with the island chairs pulled out we hardly had any room as they kept hitting the back of the couch.

That rug is an 8x10, I do have a 5x8 in storage and when I was using the 5x8 I thought it got lost. Placing a rug in this room is hard bc the fireplace is on an angle! So, to actually center the rug, the corner lays ontop of the firelace tile/lip.

Re: Furniture Placement /Rate My Space

i want to be perfectly honest to give you some things to think about.

first you have a lovely home with very nice items which were picked in good taste.

with that being said i feel like everything is mixture of styles nad finishes and not really looking put together.

some suggestions.

personally i think that the couches and rug are country style ...but your accesories are more modern/transitional. its throwing me off a little. do you have a more modern couch in a differnet room that you can swap with this one?

the rug is also a little too busy for me, my eye goes right to it. i feel a more plain rug would work better.

also you have a mix of wood finishes- black, espresso, cherry, pale wood etc.. im a stickler for matching finishes. if you are going to stick with the black theme i would get a black coffee table to match and get rid of the other items that are finished differently.

lastly i think you need to swap out 2 chairs to replace the loveseat..and also add in a coffee table or coffeetable ottoman (which can double as seating)

lastly i do think there are too many pics on the fireplace. if you cna put the tv up there that would be preferred aesthetically. otherwise i would pick your favorites and and display only those in matching frames

I agree with Porkchop.too many different styles.

I would loose the loveseat and get maybe 2 chairs, maybe some modern pilliows or even a slipcover for the couch.

Put the tv on the fireplace and remove the photos, or put them somewhere else.

You Could Put the sofa on a diaganal with the fireplace, and put a coffee table/ ottoman then opposite put two chairs and make a conversation area.

Maybe even paint one wall a color, so it stands out and make a newer look.

Re: Furniture Placement /Rate My Space

Thanks for all of the great advice.

1. I have a smaller rug with a simpler pattern that I will swap out.

2. I don't really think these pics did the furniture justice. I have a pet blanket on the loveseat, it covers the microfiber that matches the couch. The couch is microfiber, I don't think it looks country at all. Maybe the plaid pillows are thowing everyone off???? I got it to match the kitchen set in the pic below. Which you can see from the great room.

3. I have beautiful iron work in the 3 windows so I don't want to put curtains

4. I will consider getting rid of the love seat and getting a chair. Please post what you think would work.

the loveseat looks like it has a plaid bottom section and plaid on the arms

maybe its a bad pic
if you can post a pic with better lighting that would help

I disagree with putting the tv above the fireplace. It's not practical -- I think it is too high and would be a strain to watch (as the OP said it was).

Also, I think the fireplace is a nice feature of the room, and should be it's own focal point -- but I do agree with paring down the photos on top. I would maybe choose just a few vases or other small objects/groups of objects to display, but keep it minimal.

I agree the loveseat is too big for the space, so maybe just putting one chair there, or just doing as a PP suggested and getting an ottoman as a coffee table/extra seating. In my den, we got a long, rectangular ottoman that has a removable top (the flip side is a tray, so it's great for serving food/drinks). It came with two smaller ottoman cubes inside for extra seating, but we just store them in the larger ottoman when we don't need them to keep the space open.

I think -- and it's hard to tell -- that the flow of the room is being impeded by the couch. It almost looks like the room is irregularly shaped/angled, but the couch is positioned straight across. I wonder if you angled the couch a little, if that would open up the space from the entrance into the room and create better flow around the furniture... Sorry if I am not making sense, but it's just hard to tell from the photos.

Random thought that totally may not work --- if you really wanted to change things around, could you put the tv on the wall where the loveseat is and then put your couch parallel to where the island is, so that it's facing that wall. It might mean better viewing from the kitchen, and open up the room in a different way.
