FYI-For those who have toddlers who still" mouth " or "bite" everything.....
We had Noahs EI Speech Evaluation today. The therapist noticed ( and his Ped recently) how he still mouthes EVERYTHING...and its not teething b/c its things like books etc that dont feel good on the gums.
They explained some slow talkers as well as just some kids have a desire to have control of their mouth and will do this.
They sell this thing called a Chewy Tube that they can carry with them and she said they teach kids to carry them with them and bite them vs gumming/chewing everything in sight ( which Noah does and the germ factor makes me nuts) ....He chews or bites on anything, anywhere.
Anyway, heres the link in case anyone is interested. ( it is more for the 12 month and up group she said)

the chewy tube is great but it's best to watch your dc's with it and like you said teach them the proper way to use it esp. in the beginning. i've used them in my classroom and with josh and i've seen lots of gagging and even one not so pleasant spill on the floor with the tube in the mouth. it's really good for strengthening the oral muscles from what i know too.

Basically they are saying some kids have a sensory issue with loving to put things in there mouths and this will if you give to them teach them to chew on ONLY this... dont know, gonna try it.

That's very interesting! When EJ will get his services I will make sure to ask. He does put everything in this mouth still also.

DD has some sensory issues from what I'm told and her speech therapist uses these. She actually likes them and likes to chew on them. And yes, it is good for strengthening their mouth muscles. We have a scented one too - the therapist told us to get it!

AHHHH - the chewy tube! I am always tempted to get one for myself sometimes!!!!
ETA - the reason its good for some kids is that it is textured, which is good for sensory issues and for mouth awareness. That is why it is recommended....

I don't get it. DD puts everything in her mouth at 2 1/2 years old AND has started biting her fingernails. I didn't think she had a sensory isssue. She is advanced with her speech. I've read up on the internet & most sites say its generally not addicting at this age and that they do it mindlessly. Am I missing something??

Its kids who mouth things and show other issues - sensory and speech. Not for a kid who just sucks a thumb or bites nails...

The speech therapist explained to me today , my son didnt have a real need for it...meaning he does have the capable motor skills to chew or bite, BUT he does mouth everything..every toy, shopping cart handles etc, all day and is just a sensory issue in terms of liking the feeling of biting and finds textures through his mouth. The germs on all those objects though become a concern, and who wants their kid chewing on all their things as well, so she suggested he be traine dto use this vs chewing on all his books , toys and even Pacifier.....

Re: FYI-For those who have toddlers who still" mouth " or "bite" everything.....
I had a sensory thing when I was little - this is very weird, but I wanted to share.
I loved licking suede!!!!
My mom was a shopaholic, and I would love going to the coat section at Bloomingdales. I loved the way it felt on the very tip of my tongue!!!!
I even did it to people in the elevator - I knew how to be subtle. Too bad they had no suede chewy toys back then.
Other than that, I turned out OK.
