FYI: FOX5 News - NUTRITION LABELS what you should pay the most attention to

NUTRITION LABELS/LISA DRAYER Lisa Drayer, nutritionist for Women's Health magazine, will talk about nutrition labels on food products, particularly what you should pay the most attention to and how much is healthy of each category?
Lisa's tips: 1) Serving size -lets you know how much of the package you should really be eating -many containers have more than one serving.
2) Calories -the most important part of the label for anyone trying to lose weight; -you'll gain weight if you take in more calories than you burn.
3) Fats -you need fat in your diet, but avoid saturated & trans fats; -"healthy" fats amounts are not always listed, you may need to subtract the trans and saturated fats from the total fats.
4) Sodium -aim for foods with 5% or less the daily value for sodium; -avoid any food that has more than 20% your daily value of sodium.
5) Vitamins -water-soluble vitamins will be flushed out of your system if you take in more than you need -minerals can be toxic if you go overboard. -you'll be ok if you eat a balanced diet, but be careful if you take supplements.
6) Ingredients -first 3-5 ingredients listed are the most important; -look for those items to be fruits, veggies & whole grains; -avoid foods that contain lots of unrecognizable words -- they're additives and preservatives.
